# The storage crisis forces terminal price increases, Microsoft significantly raises the prices of the entire Surface lineup

According to Zhitong Finance APP, in the face of an unprecedented supply shortage of memory chips, Microsoft (MSFT.US) has significantly raised prices across its Surface series devices, becoming the latest PC manufacturer to pass cost pressures onto consumers.

The 12-inch Surface Pro 2-in-1 device, which was originally priced at $800 last year and marketed for its high cost-performance ratio and portability, now has a starting price of $1,050. Several older models have also seen price increases: the 13-inch 11th generation Surface Pro, which debuted at $1,000, is now priced at $1,500, an increase of several hundred dollars; the latest generation 13.8-inch Surface Laptop has seen price hikes of up to $500.

Microsoft stated in a press release: "Due to recent increases in memory and component costs, the prices of the new generation of Surface hardware products will be adjusted on the Microsoft official website." The company also mentioned that while it strives to maintain price stability, it will regularly evaluate and adjust Surface product pricing based on multiple factors such as market conditions and operating costs.

The current industry-wide shortage of memory chips is partly driven by the surge in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) computing power. In this context, PC manufacturers such as Dell (DELL.US) and HP (HPQ.US) have also raised product prices and limited device specifications.

Most models in the Surface series have been on the market for some time, and interested consumers have mostly purchased them at lower prices. This price increase can also be seen as a new pricing benchmark for Microsoft's next-generation Surface hardware, with the market expecting Microsoft to release new Surface devices in the coming weeks.

As for Apple (AAPL.US), the latest MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models are also priced higher than their predecessors, but the company has somewhat offset the increase in entry prices by enhancing the standard storage capacity.

The situation for the Apple Mac mini and Mac Studio desktops is even more severe: delivery times for high-memory configuration versions have been pushed back to summer and beyond. These devices are favored by AI enthusiasts for their ability to run large language models locally.

Microsoft has never positioned the Surface series as a budget option. However, with this price adjustment, the Windows developer now has no Surface computers priced below $1,000. This stands in stark contrast to Apple's recently launched MacBook Neo, which is priced at just $599 and may disrupt the low-cost PC market landscape
