# Amazon will acquire Globalstar for $11.6 billion to directly compete with Starlink

According to Zhitong Finance APP, Amazon (AMZN.US) has agreed to acquire satellite operator Globalstar (GSAT.US) for approximately $11.6 billion, a move that will help the tech giant establish its own satellite business.

Amazon announced on Tuesday that it will offer Globalstar shareholders two acquisition options: a cash compensation of $90 per share or 0.32 shares of Amazon stock (with a maximum value of $90 per share). The $90 per share acquisition offer represents a 23.5% premium over Globalstar's closing price on Monday. The transaction is expected to be completed by 2027.

Amazon is aggressively developing its low Earth orbit satellite network, Amazon Leo, in an effort to compete with Elon Musk's SpaceX. SpaceX's Starlink division has rapidly grown, boasting over 10 million active users and operating around 10,000 satellites in orbit. Starlink is expected to generate more than $9 billion in revenue this year.

The satellite broadband business is booming, especially in remote areas, but Amazon has made slow progress in achieving its goal of deploying over 7,700 satellites to expand coverage. The company has applied to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for a waiver or extension of the deadline to launch 1,600 satellites by July.

Bloomberg Intelligence analyst John Davies stated that Globalstar could accelerate Amazon's pace of action, as it already has a functioning satellite network. However, Globalstar's network is smaller than Starlink's and primarily focuses on providing connectivity services for mobile phones and other devices in areas with weak signal coverage. For example, the company supports the emergency service feature on Apple's iPhone.

As of the time of publication on Tuesday before the U.S. stock market opened, Globalstar's stock price rose by 11%, while Amazon increased by 1.3%
