# Meta and Broadcom Deepen Chip Cooperation: Broadcom CEO Leaves Meta Board to Serve as Advisor

Broadcom and Meta announced on Monday an expansion of their multi-generation strategic partnership, providing foundational technical support for the large-scale deployment of custom AI chips for Meta. **The agreement extends through 2029**, marking a new stage in the deep integration of these two technology giants in the AI infrastructure sector.

According to the joint statement, **the first phase of this cooperation commits to a deployment scale exceeding 1 gigawatt (GW), serving as the starting point for a sustained multi-gigawatt expansion plan**. This aims to deliver real-time generative AI capabilities and so-called "personal superintelligence" services to billions of users across applications such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Threads.

This scale indicates that Meta's bet on its custom silicon roadmap is intensifying significantly, while also highlighting Broadcom's core position in the field of custom AI accelerators.

Notably, **Broadcom President and CEO Hock Tan will step down from his role as a member of the Meta board to assume an advisory capacity, focusing on guiding Meta's custom silicon roadmap and infrastructure investment strategy. This move signifies a transformation in the relationship between the two companies from capital-level ties to deeper technological and business synergy.**

Driven by this news, Broadcom shares rose 3.3% in after-hours trading.

## Multi-Gigawatt Deployment Plan: Custom Silicon Accelerates Expansion

The core product of this partnership is Meta's self-developed MTIA (Meta Training and Inference Accelerator) chip. Broadcom will leverage its XPU custom accelerator platform to provide full-stack technical support for MTIA, covering chip design, advanced packaging, and network interconnectivity.

The statement reveals that Broadcom's XPU platform tightly couples logic units, memory, and high-speed I/O to support current deployments while establishing a highly scalable blueprint for multi-generation joint development.

Meta emphasized that MTIA is a cornerstone of its broader silicon strategy, optimizing both performance and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) simultaneously during large-scale deployment by precisely matching dedicated hardware with specific workloads.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's founder and CEO, stated in the announcement, "Meta is engaging in comprehensive collaboration with Broadcom in chip design, packaging, and networking to build the massive computing foundation required to deliver personal superintelligence to billions of people."

## Ethernet Network Architecture: Supporting Large-Scale Cluster Expansion

Beyond custom chips, Broadcom will also provide Meta with its Ethernet network solutions, addressing three categories of needs: rack-level vertical scaling (scale-up), cross-node horizontal scaling (scale-out), and cross-domain interconnection (scale-across).

Specifically, Broadcom's high-port-count Ethernet switches, optical interconnect products, PCIe switches, and high-speed SerDes technologies will collectively form a low-latency network architecture based on standard protocols. This network backbone is critical for eliminating network congestion during high-intensity AI workloads at scales involving tens of thousands of nodes.

Since MTIA is primarily designed for inference and low-precision computing tasks, the interconnect infrastructure supporting it must feature near-zero latency.

Broadcom stated that the rack-level interconnection solution based on Ethernet will ensure that existing and future MTIA clusters operate continuously and efficiently, significantly reducing TCO throughout Meta's multi-generation infrastructure lifecycle.

## Hock Tan's Role Adjustment: Partnership Moves Toward Deep Technological Integration

Hock Tan stepping down from the Meta board to serve as an advisor is another detail in the announcement that warrants market attention.

The joint statement noted that Hock Tan will guide Meta's custom silicon roadmap in an advisory capacity and assist in shaping its infrastructure investment direction.

This arrangement implies that as the scale of cooperation expands, interaction between the decision-making layers of the two companies will shift from formal board governance structures to more operational technical advisory mechanisms, further strengthening the depth of collaboration in joint R&D and system-level optimization.

In the statement, Hock Tan remarked, "This initial deployment of MTIA is just the beginning, heralding a continuous multi-generation roadmap. It also highlights Broadcom's unparalleled leadership in the AI networking space and the formidable strength of our XPU custom accelerator platform."
