After a nearly 7.7 per cent jump in Tesla’s Nasdaq-listed stock on Wednesday, shares of the company’s Chinese suppliers were up by as much as 4.6 per cent on Thursday morning local time. Shanghai-listed Ningbo Tuopu Group and Shenzhen-listed Zhejiang Sanhua Intelligent Controls, which both announced their relationship with the US firm back in 2016, saw their shares rise as much as 4.3 per cent and 3.4 per cent, respectively. Both firms are believed to be seeking to expand their partnership with Tesla, from supplying EV parts to robotics components. In 2024, they announced separate plans worth billions of yuan each to invest in robotics production, although they did not name any customer. Shanghai Beite Technology saw the largest share spike among suppliers, up as much as 4.6 per cent on Thursday morning. The company produces shock absorber rods for the Tesla Model 3 through a tier-1 supplier to the US EV giant. Yinbang Clad Material, which indirectly works with Tesla through Zhejiang Sanhua and France’s Valeo for the Model 3 and Model Y, saw its shares rise as much as 2.8 per cent. Tesla, whose Gigafactory in Shanghai is its largest production base, currently works with more than 400 Chinese suppliers, and more than 60 have entered Tesla’s global supply chain, the company’s China president Allan Wang Hao said at a press briefing on Tuesday. However, not every supplier is publicly listed or has disclosed their relationship with Tesla. The positive market sentiment followed Tesla chief executive Elon Musk’s announcement on X on Wednesday that the company’s AI5 chip had completed tape-out, the final step in the design phase before manufacturing. It was an “inference chip for autonomy” that would enter production in 2027, targeting a 50-fold improvement in performance compared with the previous generation, according to Tesla’s shareholder update for the fourth quarter of 2025. In January, Musk posted on X that the AI5 would be “very capable” and that two of them could match the performance of a single Nvidia Blackwell chip, but “cost peanuts and use much less power”. He also revealed on Wednesday an update on the AI6 chip, the Dojo3 system for AI training and “other exciting chips in work”. Musk tagged Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Co, a different company from foundry giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), as manufacturing partners for the AI5, although it is widely believed that TSMC was part of the deal as Taiwan Semiconductor only makes passive components such as rectifiers and diodes. Shares of Samsung and TSMC rose 3 per cent and 0.2 per cent, respectively, on Thursday.
