Meta Platforms announced an increase in prices for its Quest series VR headsets, as surging memory chip costs driven by the AI boom are passing pressure on to consumer electronics terminals.
On April 16, Bloomberg reported that Meta announced on Thursday an increase in prices for its Quest series VR headsets, effective April 19. Specifically: Entry-level Quest 3S price increased by $50, with the 128GB version rising to $350 and the 256GB version to $450; High-end model Quest 3 price increased by $100, now uniformly priced at $600. This price hike covers multiple markets including the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan, and refurbished unit prices will also be adjusted accordingly.
In a statement, Meta said: &#34;The cost of building high-performance VR hardware has risen significantly. To continue delivering the product quality users expect, we need to adjust pricing.&#34; A spokesperson stated that Meta smart glasses prices will remain unchanged for now.
This move reflects broader cost pressures across the technology sector. Apple and Microsoft have successively raised laptop prices, Samsung has increased prices for some mobile phones, and the VR headset market is no exception.
<h2>AI Boom Drives Up Memory Costs, Industry Under Pressure</h2>
The direct trigger for Meta's price hike is the rise in memory chip costs and supply chain shortages, both closely linked to the explosive demand from AI. Supply tightness has spread throughout the consumer electronics industry: Valve's latest product faces delays, Pico 4 Ultra headsets will see price increases in Japan in May, and Sony has also raised prices for home gaming consoles. Apple Vision Pro prices remain at $3,499, but Bloomberg notes that the product was already priced at a high level, leaving very limited room for further increases.
Although Meta stated it &#34;remains committed&#34; to VR devices and believes this category represents &#34;the future of computing,&#34; recent actions have raised external questions about the priority of its VR strategy. According to reports, Meta has laid off some employees in its hardware department responsible for the headset business, halted development of the virtual social product Horizon Worlds, and closed several VR game projects.
At the same time, the market performance of Meta smart glasses continues to outperform closed-headset devices. This divergence in consumer trends has led outsiders to take a cautious view on the long-term investment intensity Meta is placing on VR hardware.
