# Global CPU Shortage Hits: Intel and AMD Processor Prices Rise 15%, PC Supply Chain Faces Severe Test

The global CPU market is experiencing a rare supply crisis. Impacted by a surge in demand for AI computing power, Intel and AMD processor inventories are critically low, **with prices generally rising 10% to 15%, putting pressure on the PC and industrial computing supply chains with no signs of relief in the short term.**

According to Digitimes, **the core contradiction of this shortage is not pricing, but the complete unavailability of supply. Hyperscale cloud service providers and cloud computing providers have allocated all available CPUs to AI enterprises, leading to shortages in both enterprise-grade and consumer-grade processors.**

Unlike the memory market where there is "high price but availability," processors have fallen into a "high price but no market" dilemma, posing a direct threat to laptop manufacturers and the industrial PC market.

Price anomalies have already emerged in the market. The official suggested retail price for AMD's Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is $899, yet listings on Amazon have reached $999; Intel's latest Core Ultra 200S Plus series also shows market quotes higher than official pricing. Industry experts warn, **this situation may persist for quite some time.**

## **AI Claims Capacity, Entire CPU Supply Chain Under Pressure**

The root cause of this shortage lies in the structural shift of production priority. The AI market volume has now fully surpassed the traditional PC and industrial computing markets, with foundry lines tilting toward AI chips, significantly compressing the supply space for ordinary consumer-grade and enterprise-grade processors.

Citing supply chain sources, Digitimes reports that the most severe shortage currently affects Intel's Raptor Lake series launched in 2022—this series has long dominated the market due to its outstanding cost-performance ratio.

However, insiders reveal that delivery cycles for Raptor Lake have become meaningless; placing an order does not guarantee eventual receipt of goods.

Representatives from the notebook supply chain state that all parties do not expect further price increases in the short term, as the core issue constraining shipments is product availability rather than cost.

## **Intel's Key to Breaking Through: 18A Process Yield**

Intel's response strategy heavily relies on the progress of the 18A process node. According to Digitimes, the outlook for Intel and its partners largely hinges on the successful implementation of this new process.

Intel has already launched its first client processor product lines based on 18A, including Panther Lake for the high-end market and Wildcat Lake for entry-level PCs.

However, the actual results of this release were disappointing—there were very few Wildcat Lake notebook products, and Panther Lake notebooks were priced significantly higher, driven primarily by the combination of processor shortages and rising memory prices.

Notably, although Panther Lake is based on the 18A process, it still partially relies on TSMC modules; Wildcat Lake similarly adopts a hybrid architecture combining 18A and TSMC solutions.

This means that until the yield rate of the 18A process improves substantially, Intel's supply pressure cannot be fundamentally resolved. Against this backdrop, Intel is advancing the Arrow Lake series as its main product line targeting the PC and industrial markets.

## **AMD Benefits Short-Term, But Overall PC Market Growth Slows**

Intel's supply constraints have objectively created certain market opportunities for AMD. Some PC buyers may turn to AMD's Ryzen platform, which has recently shown relatively stable performance.

However, this situation is not a comprehensive benefit for AMD. Supply chain data shows that sales volumes for both Intel and AMD platforms are slowing down.

With memory prices continuing to rise and the shortage situation worsening, many hardware manufacturers will be forced to readjust their inventory strategies.

Additionally, the market previously anticipated price drops following the release of Google's TurboQuant algorithm, but industry insiders point out that the brief 30% drop in related memory prices is unlikely to last. The algorithm is currently in the proof-of-concept phase, and overall market demand for memory remains strong.

## **Under Dual Pressure, Supply Chain Adjustment Will Take Time**

In summary, this round of CPU shortages is a concentrated manifestation of the intensifying conflict between the expansion of AI computing power demand and the traditional PC supply chain.

The simultaneous rise in processor and memory prices is compressing the operating space for laptop manufacturers and industrial PC vendors, subjecting global supply capabilities to substantive tests.

Industry experts generally believe that whether this situation can improve depends on the key variable of how quickly Intel's 18A process yield rate improves.

Until then, Arrow Lake will bear the responsibility of maintaining Intel's share in the PC and industrial markets, while the entire supply chain may remain under tension for a considerable period.
