# Meta announced layoffs of 8,000 employees in May, with more to continue in the second half of the year

According to CCTV Finance, as the artificial intelligence strategy accelerates, many technology companies in the United States are brewing a new round of large-scale layoffs. On the 17th, Reuters reported that tech giant Meta announced plans to initiate its first round of layoffs this year in May.

Reports indicate that Meta plans to implement its first large-scale layoffs on May 20, expecting to cut about 8,000 employees, which accounts for 10% of its global workforce. The company also hinted at more rounds of layoffs in the second half of this year, but specific details such as timing and scale have yet to be finalized. This move is part of Meta's strategy to make AI a core focus, aiming to optimize its organizational structure and reduce traditional labor costs through AI efficiency.

Insiders added that the company's management may further adjust the layoff plans based on the development of artificial intelligence. Previously, reports suggested that Meta might consider cutting at least 20% of its workforce.

It is reported that this year's layoffs at Meta will be the largest since the company underwent a restructuring known as the "Year of Efficiency" from late 2022 to early 2023, during which the company cut approximately 21,000 positions. According to the latest disclosed data, as of December 31 last year, Meta had about 79,000 employees
