# ByteDance's overseas business grew nearly 50% last year: TikTok's overall GMV surged by 70%, while the company's annual net profit fell by more than 70%

ByteDance's overseas business grew nearly 50% last year, but the company's overall net profit fell by more than 70% year-on-year.

On April 20, sources informed The Paper that ByteDance's overseas business achieved rapid growth in 2025, with a year-on-year increase of nearly 50%, significantly higher than the domestic growth rate of about 20%. The proportion of overseas revenue rose from 25% in 2024 to over 30%, setting a new historical high.

Among them, TikTok Shop's annual GMV grew nearly 70% year-on-year, becoming the core engine driving overseas growth and helping TikTok achieve significant profitability in 2025.

It is noteworthy that while the overseas business is experiencing strong growth, ByteDance's net profit in 2025 fell by more than 70% year-on-year, mainly due to the company's substantial increase in AI computing power procurement, model research and development, and infrastructure investment in the third and fourth quarters.

Industry insiders told The Paper that without the impact of geopolitical factors, ByteDance's overseas business revenue might have already surpassed its domestic business.

Previously, media reports indicated that TikTok Shop's active consumers had reached 400 million, with the full-year GMV in 2025 approaching $100 billion. TikTok Shop has formed a pattern of rapid growth across multiple regions. In 2025, sales in the U.S. market increased by 108% year-on-year, while major European markets saw increases of over 100%; Southeast Asia remained the second in the industry, closely following Shopee; new markets performed impressively, with GMV in Brazil growing about 25 times within three months of launch and about 20 times in Japan within four months. Driven by the "Black Friday" shopping season, GMV in the fourth quarter exceeded $25 billion, with December's monthly GMV surpassing Shopee in overseas markets, continuously enhancing its industry position.

However, alongside rapid growth, TikTok Shop also faces increasingly fierce external competition: Amazon launched a low-price discount mall, AmazonHaul, directly competing with products under $20; Shopee increased its investment in live-streaming sales and partnered with YouTube to expand short video shopping scenarios, forming a direct competition in core markets like Southeast Asia.

At the same time, regulatory pressure cannot be ignored: the European Union plans to impose fees on low-value packages and strengthen compliance supervision; some emerging markets are concerned about foreign e-commerce dominating local markets, leading to a clear tightening of regulations, which also brings some uncertainty to TikTok Shop's further development.
