Europe's pure electric vehicle sales approached 600,000 units in a single quarter, surging 51% in March According to the Zhitong Finance APP, in the first quarter of 2026, the sales of pure electric vehicles in major European automotive markets increased by nearly one-third. This surge was driven by the Iran war, which triggered the most severe gasoline price spike in years, prompting drivers to seek alternatives to internal combustion engine vehicles. Data released on Monday by the industry association European Automobile Manufacturers Association and research institution New Automotive showed that in 15 European markets, the registration of new pure electric vehicles (BEVs) in the first quarter increased by 29.4% year-on-year, reaching nearly 560,000 units; the registration in March alone exceeded 240,000 units, with a growth rate of 51.3%. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), last year, the sales of pure electric vehicles in these markets accounted for 94% of the total sales in the EU and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), whose member countries implement carbon dioxide emission regulatory laws consistent with the EU. Chris Hurell, Secretary General of the European Electric Vehicle Association, stated in a statement, "The surge in electric vehicle sales in March is one of the most significant recent advancements in energy security for Europe during months when oil dependence has become a real vulnerability." The joint statement from the two institutions noted that the 500,000 pure electric vehicles registered in that quarter would be sufficient to reduce oil consumption by 2 million barrels annually. The statement pointed out that the sales of pure electric vehicles in the five largest electric vehicle markets in the region—Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and Poland—have all increased by over 40% this year. It is estimated that in March, 21.2% of all new vehicles registered in the EU and EFTA were electric vehicles. The chart shows the changes in fuel prices in the UK over time and the online search volume for "electric vehicles" and "EVs." In another report released in early April, New Automotive stated that driven by rising gasoline prices, the UK, the second-largest pure electric vehicle market after Germany, saw a 12.8% increase in pure electric vehicle registrations in the first quarter, accounting for 22.5% of new car sales in the country ### Related Stocks - [515030.CN](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/515030.CN.md) - [IDRV.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/IDRV.US.md) - [516380.CN](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/516380.CN.md) - [KARS.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/KARS.US.md) - [ZAP.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/ZAP.US.md) - [ECAR.UK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/ECAR.UK.md) - [DRIV.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/DRIV.US.md) ## Related News & Research - [Growth in global electric vehicle sales expected to continue in 2026](https://longbridge.com/en/news/287007295.md) - [Chinese car dealerships take over Britain as drivers back cheap EVs](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286916331.md) - [Key facts: Li Auto L9 uses FlexNoC/Magillem for 2,560 TOPS; shares fall](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286979573.md) - [BYD delays flagship electric SUV launch as preorders surge to over 100,000](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286797437.md) - [Volvo reveals EX60 prices start at under $60,000 with over 300 miles rangeof](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286808075.md)
