You can share your thoughts with us at RECORDS ALL AROUND, BUT THE DOW RSVP’S ‘NO’ U.S. equity index futures are under pressure heading into Monday’s open, with renewed tensions in the Middle East weighing on sentiment. Over the weekend, concerns resurfaced around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy supplies, and that’s proving enough to knock markets off balance, at least early on. That said, the market may have already been due for a breather. On Friday, the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) pulled off a rare feat, notching its 13th straight daily gain. That kind of streak doesn’t come around often — the last time the Nasdaq managed it was back in January 1992. For added historical flavor, the index rose 14 days in a row in June 1987. Friday’s rally was broad, too. A long list of indexes joined the new highs party, including the S&P 500 (.SPX) , the S&P MidCap 400 Index (.MID) , the S&P SmallCap 600 Index (.SPCY) , the Russell 2000 (.RUT) , the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (.SOX) , and even the Dow Jones Transportation Average (.DJT) . In other words, just about everyone showed up to the celebration. Everyone, that is, except the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) . Indeed, the market’s elder statesman continues to be the odd man out. On Friday, it failed to push through resistance near its February highs, just shy of the 50,000 psychological level. After reaching an intraday high near 49,718, the index faded and closed at 49,447 — still more than 2% below its February intraday record. With E-mini Dow futures (YMcv1) down around 200 points ahead of the open, the blue-chip average’s failure to confirm the broader market’s new highs remains a sticking point for investors, especially those who follow Dow Theory. Bulls, however, will argue that pullbacks so far have been relatively orderly. Initial support levels loom below, including an April 17 gap near 48,683 and the 50-day moving average around 47,940. Whether this weakness proves shallow could determine if the DJI gets another clean shot at reclaiming its highs.
