Media reports suggested that Trump was not happy with Iran's latest proposal, which would conclude the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but postpone discussions around Tehran's nuclear ambitions to a later stage. Trump has often said that eradicating Iran's nuclear capabilities, particularly its access to a nuclear weapon, has been a driving force of the joint U.S.-Israeli assault launched in late February. For that reason, Trump was displeased by the proposal, Reuters reported, citing a U.S. official briefed on the matter. Hopes for a revival in peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran were dented over the weekend, when Trump called off sending his negotiators to Pakistan for a fresh round of talks. Iran's foreign minister briefly visited the Pakistani capital twice over the weekend, before meeting with - and receiving support from - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. Amid all of the diplomatic wrangling, the Strait of Hormuz remains all but shuttered to shipping traffic. The narrow waterway off of Iran's southern coast, a critical chokepoint through which around a fifth of the world's oil traverses, has been virtually closed off for weeks, underpinning a spike in oil prices to well above pre-war levels. Worries have abounded around an energy shock sparking a global surge in inflationary pressures that could force central banks to hike interest rates in response.
