# Nine years of sharpening a sword! Tesla Semi electric heavy trucks finally enter mass production, possibly catching up with the market demand explosion period

According to Zhitong Finance APP, Tesla (TSLA.US) announced that the first Semi electric heavy-duty truck has officially rolled off the production line at its new high-capacity production line in the Nevada Gigafactory. According to its official website, deliveries are expected to begin this year. It is reported that the dedicated production line for the Semi at the Nevada Gigafactory covers an area of 1.7 million square feet, with an annual production capacity designed for 50,000 units, and an expected delivery volume of 5,000 to 15,000 units by 2026. This facility has achieved vertical integration of the 4680 battery, addressing previous supply chain bottlenecks that constrained mass production and ensuring capacity ramp-up.

The Tesla Semi electric heavy-duty truck is available in two configurations: the standard range version has a range of 325 miles and is priced at $260,000; the long-range version has a range of 500 miles and is priced at $290,000, making it the lowest-priced Class 8 pure electric tractor head on the market. Both models are equipped with three motors, with a total power output of 800 kW (approximately 1,072 horsepower) and an energy efficiency of 1.7 kWh/mile; the long-range version has a peak charging power of 1.2 megawatts and a curb weight of 23,000 pounds. After three years of optimization, the overall weight of the vehicle has been reduced by approximately 1,000 pounds compared to previous versions, improving both cargo capacity and operational efficiency.

This milestone marks a breakthrough for this long-delayed project. The Semi electric heavy-duty truck was first unveiled in 2017, with mass production originally scheduled to start in 2019, but it has been postponed multiple times. A small batch was manually delivered to PepsiCo at the end of 2022, and after three years of adjustments, it has finally entered the stage of large-scale production.

At the 2025 annual shareholder meeting, Tesla CEO Elon Musk clearly stated to shareholders that the Semi mass production plan is progressing steadily according to the established timeline and will officially launch in 2026. In addition to confirming the mass production timeline, Tesla's newly released exterior design drawings show that the Semi has undergone significant redesign, aligning its styling language more closely with Tesla's current product matrix.

Musk mentioned in the Q1 2026 earnings call that the Tesla Semi, as a product with a new supply chain, will have very slow initial production, but will see exponential growth by the end of this year and into next year. Additionally, Tesla will focus on increasing the production capacity of all factories and all models for the remainder of this year.

Currently, the electrification of heavy-duty trucks is rapidly developing, with a continuous increase in demand for pure electric heavy-duty trucks. The Tesla Semi electric heavy-duty truck is expected to benefit from this trend. Data from California's "Clean Trucks and Buses Incentive Program" shows that from January 2025 to February 2026, there were 965 applications for the Semi, accounting for the vast majority of the total 1,067 applications, far exceeding the combined total of less than 100 applications from Daimler, PACCAR, and Volvo, indicating a leading market recognition over competing products. Meanwhile, the Semi electric heavy-duty truck also has a competitive pricing advantage—Daimler's electric truck Freightliner eCascadia is priced over $400,000, while Volvo's electric truck prices range from $276,000 to over $440,000
