While Samsung rose 4.8%, SK Hynix surged 12%, widening the gap between the two companies. Concerns over profit-sharing and a threatened strike by Samsung's union could complicate its comeback efforts. Analysts have adjusted price targets, with Citigroup lowering Samsung's to 300,000 won, citing labor tensions, while BofA raised SK Hynix's target, suggesting a favorable pricing environment for Hynix amid Samsung's challenges." datetime: "2026-05-04T13:18:25.000Z" locales: - [zh-CN](https://longbridge.com/zh-CN/news/285079079.md) - [en](https://longbridge.com/en/news/285079079.md) - [zh-HK](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/285079079.md) --- # Samsung Hits Record High, But SK Hynix's 12% Surge Steals The Rally Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) shares could face a tougher setup even after hitting a record high, as investors weigh the company's AI-driven semiconductor recovery against a looming labor dispute that may widen its recent gap with SK Hynix (HXSCL). Samsung rose as much as 4.8% on Monday during a global rally fueled by continued optimism around artificial intelligence, but the move was overshadowed by a 12% surge in SK Hynix. The divergence has already become a major signal for investors, with Samsung trailing its memory-chip rival by more than 25 percentage points last month. The concern is not about AI demand fading. It is about whether Samsung can fully capture that demand while facing rising internal pressure over how AI-driven profits should be shared. The labor dispute is becoming a bigger part of Samsung's investment story. The company's union staged a rally on April 23 demanding a greater share of profits and has threatened an 18-day strike starting May 21. The union is asking for 15% of operating profit to be handed to chip-division employees, after rejecting management's earlier offer that included 10% of operating profit for bonuses and a 6.2% wage increase. That standoff could make Samsung's comeback effort more difficult after the company fell behind SK Hynix in high-bandwidth memory, one of the most profitable areas tied to AI data centers. Stanley Tang, a senior portfolio manager at Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management, said investors remain bullish on AI-driven demand for high-bandwidth memory but are concerned about a potential Samsung strike. He also noted that Taiwan's MediaTek and ASE Technology Holding were both up nearly 10%, making Samsung the name still lagging in the broader AI-linked rally. Samsung has tried to reassure investors that the situation can be managed. CFO Park Sooncheol said on last week's earnings call that Samsung is addressing labor-management issues under laws and procedures, will keep prioritizing dialogue with the union, and has dedicated teams and response systems prepared to minimize possible production disruptions if a strike happens. The timing is sensitive because Samsung's semiconductor arm posted historic profit in the March quarter, beating expectations with a 48-fold jump as AI data center orders delivered hefty margins. SK Hynix has already moved to cool its own labor tensions, reaching a September agreement to allocate 10% of annual operating profit to a bonus pool, avoiding a strike and possibly setting a precedent for Korea's tech industry. Citigroup (C) analysts led by Peter Lee cut Samsung's price target to 300,000 won from 320,000 won on April 30, warning that bonus-related provisions tied to an intensifying labor strike could pressure earnings. BofA Securities analysts led by Simon Woo raised price targets for SK Hynix and said Samsung's potential strike could create a more favorable chip-pricing environment for Hynix. ### Related Stocks - [07747.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/07747.HK.md) - [07709.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/07709.HK.md) - [SSNGY.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SSNGY.US.md) - [MTK.NA](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/MTK.NA.md) - [ASX.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/ASX.US.md) - [C.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/C.US.md) - [BAC.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BAC.US.md) - [SMSN.UK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SMSN.UK.md) - [C-R.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/C-R.US.md) - [BAC-Q.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BAC-Q.US.md) - [BML-L.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BML-L.US.md) - [BAC-L.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BAC-L.US.md) - [BAC-K.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BAC-K.US.md) - [BML-H.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BML-H.US.md) - [BAC-N.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BAC-N.US.md) - [BAC-E.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BAC-E.US.md) - [MER-K.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/MER-K.US.md) - [BAC-O.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BAC-O.US.md) - [BML-G.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BML-G.US.md) - [BAC-M.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BAC-M.US.md) - [BAC-B.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BAC-B.US.md) - [BML-J.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BML-J.US.md) - [BAC-S.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BAC-S.US.md) - [BAC-P.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BAC-P.US.md) - [8648.JP](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/8648.JP.md) ## Related News & Research - [Samsung is expanding its workforce for its robotics unit](https://longbridge.com/en/news/285726056.md) - [Key facts: Citi Cuts SK Hynix Profit Forecasts; Earmarks 10% Bonus](https://longbridge.com/en/news/285177756.md) - [The AI Melt-Up Just Went Full Panic](https://longbridge.com/en/news/285348017.md) - [Samsung Hits $1 Trillion Valuation Amid Apple Chip Diversification Talks](https://longbridge.com/en/news/285427732.md) - [The chip craze is turning a glass company and a toilet maker into AI stocks](https://longbridge.com/en/news/285458179.md)
