Total global EV battery usage reached 244.6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) from January to March, up 9.1% year-on-year, according to data released Wednesday by South Korean market tracker SNE Research. CATL maintained its dominance in the global market during the period, recording a commanding 40.7% overall market share. The figure is notably higher than the 38.5% posted a year earlier, though lower than the 42.1% seen in the January-February period. Join us on Telegram or Google News The Chinese battery giant saw its battery installations reach 99.5 GWh in the first quarter, representing a 15.2% increase from 86.4 GWh in the same period last year. The growth was largely attributed to the expansion in overall vehicle sales among its key clients, such as Chinese automakers Seres, Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO), and Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI). In contrast, BYD, which ranks second globally, suffered a notable setback in the first three months of 2026 as its global market share slid to 13.7%. The performance was lower than the 16.2% recorded in the same period last year, but higher than the 13.4% logged in January-February. BYD recorded about 33.5 GWh in total battery installations during the January-March period, an 8.0% drop compared with 36.4 GWh a year earlier. The decline was primarily driven by sluggish sales of its own branded vehicles in the domestic Chinese market, which weighed on battery usage despite increased supplies to new clients such as Xiaomi, SNE Research noted. South Korea's LG Energy Solution (LGES) held firm at third place globally with 23.7 GWh of battery installations and a 9.7% share during the period, as its total usage grew 6.6% year-on-year. China's CALB ranked fourth with 11.6 GWh of installations and a 4.8% share in the first quarter, achieving a robust year-on-year growth of 31.7%. China's Gotion High-tech followed closely in fifth place with 10.2 GWh of installations, capturing a 4.2% global market share during the period. Japan's Panasonic ranked sixth globally with 9.1 GWh of installations and a 3.7% share, reflecting a modest 4.0% year-on-year growth. Two other South Korean firms, SK On and Samsung SDI, also suffered severe setbacks, with their total battery usage dropping 10.4% and 27.7% year-on-year, respectively. SK On ranked seventh with 9.0 GWh of installations and a 3.7% market share, while Samsung SDI fell out of the top 10 rankings with 5.3 GWh of usage. The combined global market share of the top three South Korean companies, including LGES, stood at 15.6% in the January-March period, down 2.1 percentage points from a year earlier. The widespread data slump among South Korean battery makers was largely due to a sharp 28.4% plunge in US EV market sales, alongside slowing demand from legacy automakers. China's Eve Energy, Svolt Energy, and Sunwoda ranked eighth, ninth, and tenth in the global market, with battery installations of 7.5, 6.5, and 5.5 GWh, respectively. The three growing Chinese companies accounted for 3.1%, 2.7%, and 2.2% of the global EV battery market share, respectively, during the January-March statistical period. China Mar power battery installations flat as production surges 50% China's battery sales grew significantly in March as energy storage battery sales doubled. ### Related Stocks - [BYDDF.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BYDDF.US.md) - [BYDDY.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BYDDY.US.md) - [01211.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/01211.HK.md) - [002594.CN](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/002594.CN.md) - [03750.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/03750.HK.md) - [300750.CN](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/300750.CN.md) - [03931.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/03931.HK.md) - [002074.CN](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/002074.CN.md) - [6752.JP](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/6752.JP.md) - [PCRHY.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/PCRHY.US.md) - [300014.CN](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/300014.CN.md) - [300207.CN](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/300207.CN.md) - [09927.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/09927.HK.md) - [601127.CN](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/601127.CN.md) - [NIO.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/NIO.US.md) - [09866.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/09866.HK.md) - [NIO.SG](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/NIO.SG.md) - [LI.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/LI.US.md) - [02015.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/02015.HK.md) - [01810.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/01810.HK.md) - [XIACY.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/XIACY.US.md) - [SMSN.UK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SMSN.UK.md) - [HCCD.SG](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/HCCD.SG.md) - [HYDD.SG](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/HYDD.SG.md) - [81211.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/81211.HK.md) - [81810.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/81810.HK.md) - [HXXD.SG](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/HXXD.SG.md) - [SSNGY.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SSNGY.US.md) ## Related News & Research - [BYD sales continue to decline](https://longbridge.com/en/news/285046504.md) - [CATL taps Hong Kong market for $5 billion to fund global capacity expansion](https://longbridge.com/en/news/284295780.md) - [BYD to establish Flash Charging stations in Australia and New Zealand](https://longbridge.com/en/news/285080374.md) - [CATL raises nearly €4.3 billion in Hong Kong share sale](https://longbridge.com/en/news/284352659.md) - [China’s EV and battery makers race to cut charging times to under 10 minutes](https://longbridge.com/en/news/284368333.md)
