# Microsoft reassesses its 2030 clean energy goals as the expansion of AI data centers intensifies energy and emissions reduction pressures

According to reports, Microsoft (MSFT.US) is considering delaying or even abandoning its 2030 "100/100/0" clean energy goal due to the rapid expansion of data centers in the AI era, which has increasingly highlighted the conflict between energy demand and emission reduction commitments. Reports indicate that Microsoft is still discussing related plans internally and has not made a final decision.

A Microsoft spokesperson stated that the company will continue to seek to maintain its annual renewable energy matching goals but did not directly respond to the stricter "hourly matching" commitment. Microsoft proposed the "100/100/0" goal in 2021, aiming to achieve 100% of its electricity consumption matched by zero-carbon energy procurement 100% of the time by 2030. This means the company must not only achieve green power coverage on an annual basis but also match its actual electricity demand with zero-carbon energy from the same grid every hour, which is considered one of the most aggressive emission reduction targets in the tech industry.

However, with the AI boom driving rapid expansion of data center construction, these goals are facing real challenges. Reports indicate that tech giants, including Amazon (AMZN.US) and Meta (META.US), are accelerating their shift to natural gas power solutions to meet the enormous electricity demands of AI infrastructure.

Alexia Kelly, Managing Director of High Tide Foundation, stated that in the race to build data centers, clean energy goals are being marginalized, with "natural gas becoming the preferred energy source."

In its latest sustainability report, Microsoft disclosed that since the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI at the end of 2022, the company's carbon emissions have risen by approximately 23% compared to previous baseline levels. Microsoft pointed out that the expansion of AI and cloud business is a significant reason for the increase in emissions. Meanwhile, carbon emissions from Google (GOOG.US, GOOGL.US), Amazon, and Meta have also risen by 51%, 33%, and 64% respectively compared to previous baseline levels, indicating that the AI wave is putting widespread pressure on emission reduction targets across the tech industry.

Microsoft previously stated that the company adds nearly 1 gigawatt of data center capacity on average every three months. In March of this year, media reports indicated that Microsoft is discussing long-term cooperation agreements with Chevron (CVX.US) and investment firm Engine No. 1 to support a large energy integrated project in West Texas, providing power for future data center parks.

At the same time, Japan's SoftBank also plans to build a large AI data center in Ohio and intends to deploy approximately $33 billion in natural gas power generation facilities by the end of this decade. The U.S. Department of Energy has also announced collaborations with SoftBank and the Ohio subsidiary of American Electric Power to upgrade energy infrastructure and advance advanced computing project construction.

Reports also indicate that Microsoft's capital expenditures are expected to reach $190 billion this year. As AI-related costs continue to rise, budgets in several departments of the company are becoming tight, including some teams responsible for decarbonization projects. Therefore, the company's financial investment in clean energy projects is undergoing stricter scrutiny The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that about half of the new electricity demand from data centers worldwide will be met by renewable energy, but in the U.S. market, natural gas will still be the primary energy source. Overall, as the construction of AI infrastructure continues to accelerate, how tech giants balance growth, energy security, and emission reduction targets will become an important topic of market focus in the coming years
