# Industry Brief: Average Ticket Price Declines, May Day Box Office Revenue Only Increases by 1.4%

During this year's five-day May Day holiday, China's box office only grew by 1.4%, reaching 758 million yuan, continuing the recent sluggish performance of the domestic film market during holiday periods.

Caixin reported on Wednesday, citing data from the ticketing platform MAOYAN ENT, that during this holiday period, the number of cinema attendees reached 20.9 million, an increase of 10% compared to 2025. However, the average ticket price dropped by 8% from 39.5 yuan in 2025 to 36.3 yuan, offsetting most of the revenue gains from the increase in attendance.

The lack of growth may be partly attributed to the reduced number of new films released during this period. Originally, 18 new films were scheduled to premiere during the holiday, but several films were suddenly withdrawn, resulting in only 12 films being released.

Only two films surpassed 100 million yuan at the box office during this period: leading film "The Vanished" grossed 260 million yuan, while "Cold War 1994" achieved a box office of 200 million yuan.
