description: "Tesla has updated the specifications for the Model 3 Premium Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), lowering the peak Supercharging speed from 250 kW to 175 kW, dispelling rumors of a switch to Sunwoda's battery cells. The vehicle can now recover up to 259 km of range in 15 minutes, down from 271 km. The expected battery capacity remains at 62.5 kWh, similar to the existing CATL battery pack. Additionally, the acceleration time has changed from 4.2 seconds to 5.2 seconds. Tesla's integration of new suppliers like Sunwoda is still under validation and testing."

# Tesla updates Model 3 RWD Supercharging specs, suggesting no Sunwoda battery switch yet

Adding to the list of specification updates for the new Model 3 Premium Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), Tesla has also updated the peak Supercharging speed. The update dispels recent rumours that the vehicles are equipped with new battery cells from Sunwoda.

When the new Model 3 variant launched in Canada last week, Tesla’s Canadian website listed the Model 3 RWD with peak charging speeds of 250 kW. This triggered speculation that the company had already switched to Sunwoda’s newer third-generation LFP battery cells, which would have enabled the pack to handle the higher charging speeds.

However, not long after those rumours began circulating on Thursday, Tesla revised those charging figures, lowering the listed peak charging speed from 250 kW to 175 kW. Tesla also adjusted its Supercharging estimate, with the website now stating the Model 3 RWD can recover up to 259 km of range in 15 minutes, compared to the previously listed 271 km.

While this is not conclusive, there are several other clues suggesting the battery pack is not likely from Sunwoda, which Tesla only added as a supplier last month.

The Model 3 RWD is expected to have a usable battery capacity of 62.5 kWh — exactly the same figure Tesla already declares for the existing CATL 6M LFP battery pack used in Europe. The vehicle’s weight also remains unchanged, something that would be unlikely if Tesla had introduced a different battery chemistry or pack configuration.

Even the improved acceleration time, which recently changed from 4.2 seconds to 5.2 seconds to reach 100 km/h, may not point to a battery upgrade. Instead, Tesla could have switched to a newer rear drive unit configuration, moving from the older 3D7 motor (194kW) to the more powerful 3D6 setup (220kW).

Timing also raises questions about the Sunwoda rumours. Reports of Tesla adding Sunwoda to its supply chain only surfaced last month, making it seem unusually fast for the automaker to already be integrating the cells into production vehicles destined for export markets. Tesla will likely take more time for validation and testing before introducing new suppliers and components.

Along with the Supercharger speeds, Tesla has also revised the 0-100 km/h acceleration time, as well as the shortening the battery and drive unit warranty.

If you have already ordered the Model 3 Premium RWD and are disappointed with the recent spec revisions, there is likely little recourse available. Tesla would probably refund the $250 order deposit for buyers who choose to cancel, but it is unlikely the company will offer any additional compensation.
