# China's CGN Starts Building Fourth Hualong One Atomic Power Unit of Taipingling Project

(Yicai) May 12 -- China General Nuclear Power, a state-owned atomic and clean energy developer, has started construction work on the fourth Hualong One nuclear power unit of the Taipingling project.

The first concrete pour of the nuclear island for Unit 1 of the Taipingling project in Huizhou, Guangdong province, was completed on May 10, CGN announced yesterday. The plant is expected to have six Hualong One nuclear power units, each with an installed capacity of 1,200 megawatts.

The Taipingling project, with a total investment of over CNY120 billion (USD17.7 billion), is the first nuclear power project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to adopt China's self-developed third-generation nuclear power technology Hualong One.

Once fully operational, the Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant will generate over 55 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by about 16.7 million tons and carbon dioxide emissions by about 50.82 million tons. It can meet the production and living demands of about one million people.

Unit 1 of the Taipingling nuclear power plant was put into operation last month, Unit 2 completed its first nuclear fuel loading and entered the nuclear commissioning stage at the beginning of this month, and Unit 3 started construction on June 10, last year, and it is still in progress.

Guangdong is investing heavily in nuclear power. In the list of key provincial projects for this year, there are four nuclear power plants under construction in Taipingling, Taishan, Lufeng, and Lianjiang, as well as the Jieyang and Yangxi nuclear power plants in the early preparation stage, the Huakun No. 1 offshore floating nuclear power small modular reactor demonstration project, and the Maoming nuclear energy heating project.

CGN's shares \[SHE: 003816\] were trading up 1.1 percent at CNY4.81 (70 US cents) as of lunch break today. The Shenzhen Component Index fell 0.9 percent.
