# Confronting Windows and Mac: Google launches high-end brand Googlebook, attempting to define "AI notebook"

According to Zhitong Finance APP, Google (GOOGL.US), a subsidiary of Alphabet, has launched a new high-end notebook computer sub-product called "Googlebook." This series will run on the Android system and will prominently showcase Gemini artificial intelligence. Hardware partners Dell Technologies, Lenovo Group, and HP will release models built on this platform in the coming months.

This move was announced on Tuesday alongside a series of upcoming Android 17 updates, marking Google's renewed efforts in the notebook sector. Through this initiative, Google is able to proactively integrate the core features of Gemini into the native operating system, potentially offering more consumer-facing AI capabilities than Windows and Mac notebooks.

Google positions this new notebook as a fusion of Android and ChromeOS, the latter being the underlying software for budget Chromebook devices. Since its launch 15 years ago, Chromebooks have succeeded in the education market and among consumers who only need basic computing needs met through a browser.

However, the new system will offer significantly stronger performance and higher quality hardware than Chromebooks. While specific machine designs will vary by manufacturer, all Googlebooks will feature the iconic "Glowbar" light strip that lights up when the notebook is powered on.

In targeting this segment that lies between high-end and entry-level, aimed at providing an experience that surpasses that of Chromebooks or the cheapest Windows PCs, Google and its partners are not alone. Earlier this year, Apple launched the $599 MacBook Neo, which helped its Mac sales achieve approximately 6% quarterly growth.

The search giant stated that it plans to share more details later this year, at which point partners will begin to unveil their respective products. ASUS and Acer have also signed on to release Googlebook hardware.

Samiir Samat, Google's president responsible for the Android ecosystem, stated in an interview, "There is an opportunity for further innovation in the laptop space, especially in the high-end market," and he declined to comment on whether Google plans to release its own Googlebook. Since the launch of the Pixelbook Go in 2019, Google has not released a Google-branded notebook.

Samat added that Google has the opportunity to integrate AI in "a way that no one has really touched yet, in a distinctive manner." The "Gemini Intelligence," announced simultaneously on Tuesday, is a new brand for user-facing AI features that will gradually roll out to high-end Android devices this year.

Although Googlebook will make Gemini the core of the user experience, Google stated that the design intention of its AI features is to take a backseat when not needed. New features include the "Magic Pointer," which gives the touchpad cursor more diverse capabilities This feature has contextual awareness, and when certain content on the screen can be assisted by Gemini, it will prompt the user.

For example, hovering the cursor over a message may suggest a quick reply, while hovering over a meeting may display location ideas. Samat stated, "Features like Magic Pointer seem simple once you see them, but achieving perfection is actually quite difficult. We have accomplished this on mobile with 'Instant Circle Search,' and we are very much looking forward to using similar features on laptops."

Another feature allows users to have Gemini create custom widgets for almost any purpose.

Google hopes that Googlebook will attract app developers, enabling them to efficiently adapt software and provide a consistent experience across different types of hardware. This also means consumers can directly use their personal apps from their Android phones on their laptops. Apple introduced the iPhone mirroring feature for Mac in 2024, partly because many developers chose to prohibit their popular mobile apps from running natively on macOS.

Even with the launch of Googlebook, ChromeOS will not disappear. Samat said, "Over 60% of the U.S. education market is Chromebook. We believe its fit there remains very strong."
