# Ma Huateng: A year ago, we thought we had boarded the AI ship only to find it was leaking; now we are standing on it but cannot yet sit down

Ma Huateng acknowledged the company's tortuous journey in the field of artificial intelligence, using a humorous metaphor to outline the current predicament: having boarded the ship, but not yet seated securely.

On May 13, at Tencent's general meeting of shareholders, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer Ma Huateng provided the most candid response to date regarding external doubts about whether Tencent is lagging in AI. He stated, **“A year ago, we thought we had boarded the ship, only to later discover that it was leaking. Now, we feel we have managed to stand on it, but we still cannot sit down. We still hope the ship can pick up speed.”**

Ma Huateng also emphasized that while Tencent may not be the quickest in the industry to seize opportunities, it insists on taking the right path, leveraging its unique advantages to advance steadily. “We cannot simply jump over to grab others' territory just because we see them doing it there. We tried grabbing territory in the past as well, but basically failed.”
