The new platform enhances power efficiency and performance, while also lowering chip size, the company said.

United Microelectronics ( UMC ) said the new 14nm platform also optimizes electrical performance through I/O devices and increased drive speeds.

Shares of the company were up 9% in recent Thursday premarket activity.
