Wang Chuanfu, chairman and president of BYD, said on Friday that the company's battery capacity is currently tight. He made the remarks at the 2026 Yangwang Business Research Institute conference, saying multiple models across BYD's Dynasty and Ocean lineup, as well as the Denza and Yangwang brands, are entering a production ramp-up phase, according to a report by local media Yicai. The new energy vehicle (NEV) maker posted sales of 321,123 units in April, representing a 6.96% increase from March. However, this marked the company's eighth consecutive month of year-on-year sales decline, dropping by 15.51%. In the first four months of this year, BYD's cumulative NEV sales stood at 1,021,586 units, down 26.02% year-on-year. The company has recently launched a flurry of models featuring new technologies. In addition, BYD's net profit in the first quarter plunged 55.38% to 4.09 billion yuan ($600 million). The steep decline in profit was largely attributed to the price war in the Chinese market, the phase-out of supportive policies, and surging hardware costs in the supply chain. Despite pressure on domestic sales, BYD has made significant breakthroughs in the high-end market and overseas business. Its overseas shipments hit a record high in April. Orders for the company's latest flagship SUV, Datang, quickly surpassed 100,000 units just two weeks after pre-sales began. The Datang SUV has a starting pre-sales price of 250,000 yuan. BYD also launched the 2026 Seagull and the flash charging versions of Fang Cheng Bao models this week.
