# Canada Court Issues $73 Million Fine Against ArcelorMittal on Environmental Violations

OTTAWA--A Canadian court slapped a hefty fine against ArcelorMittal because of violations of the country's environmental laws.

Canada's environmental ministry said Friday the fine of 100 million Canadian dollars, or the equivalent of $73 million, is related to the release of harmful material that threatens to degrade water quality and harm fish habitat, which took place over an eight-year period between May 2014 and May 2022.

The dumping happened at the Fire Lake Mine and at the Mont-Wright mining complex, the largest open-pit iron mine in Canada. ArcelorMittal's web site indicates that the two mines represent over 30% of company's global iron-ore supply.

A spokesman from ArcelorMittal didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
