# Verus Exploit Suspected Due to Fake Merkle Proof

According to Odaily, SlowMist's Cosine posted on X platform that the Verus theft might have been caused by attackers creating a fake Merkle proof. This proof reportedly passed the verification of the Verus Ethereum bridge, which is not open-source, allowing the attackers to withdraw funds including ETH, tBTC, and USDC.
