description: "Sony has announced a price increase for its PlayStation Plus subscription service, effective May 20, with monthly rates rising from $9.99 to $10.99 in the U.S. and similar increases in the UK and Europe. The decision has faced backlash from fans, especially as Microsoft has cut prices on Xbox Game Pass. Current subscribers are not immediately affected, but those who let their subscriptions lapse will pay the new rates. The increase comes amid a forecasted decline in gaming revenue for Sony, despite expected growth in gaming profits."

# PlayStation Plus price hike blasted by angry fans

Sony has announced a price increase for its PlayStation Plus subscription service, effective May 20, and the response from gaming fans has been swift and broadly negative. The company attributed the changes to ongoing market conditions, a rationale that many subscribers found unconvincing given that Microsoft recently moved in the opposite direction by cutting prices on some Xbox Game Pass tiers.

The increase affects PlayStation Plus Essential, the base tier of Sony’s subscription service, and applies to new subscribers in select regions. Monthly subscriptions will rise from $9.99 to $10.99 in the United States, and three-month plans will climb from $24.99 to $27.99.

In the United Kingdom, the monthly rate moves from £6.99 to £7.99 and the three-month plan from £19.99 to £21.99. European pricing follows a similar pattern. The 12-month subscription option remains unchanged.

### **Who is affected and what current subscribers should know**

Existing subscribers in most regions will not see their costs go up right away. Sony confirmed that the price changes apply to new members only, meaning current subscribers can continue paying their existing rate. However, anyone who allows their subscription to lapse or switches to a different plan will be required to rejoin at the new, higher price. India and Turkey are exceptions, where the changes apply to current subscribers as well.

PlayStation Plus is required to access online multiplayer on PS4 and PS5, and it also provides monthly downloadable games and exclusive PlayStation Store discounts.

> Starting May 20, PlayStation Plus prices for new customers will increase in select regions. Due to ongoing market conditions, prices will start at $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP for 1-month subscriptions and $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP for 3-month subscriptions.…

### **Fans push back as the wider context raises eyebrows**

The announcement drew heavy criticism across social media. Many fans questioned whether online multiplayer should require a paid subscription at all, pointing to the recurring cost as a particularly difficult sell as prices continue to increase across the board. Others tied the latest increase to Sony’s earlier decision to raise PS5 hardware prices in March, viewing both changes as compounding financial pressure on players.

The contrast with Microsoft only added to the frustration. While Sony pointed to market conditions to explain its higher prices, Microsoft recently cut the cost of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, even while acknowledging that future Call of Duty releases would no longer be included on the service from day one. The divergence made Sony’s rationale harder for many in the gaming community to accept.

### **The GTA 6 factor**

The timing of this price change deserves attention. It arrives approximately six months before the planned November 19 release of Grand Theft Auto 6, a game expected to push a large number of new buyers into the current console generation. An active PlayStation Plus subscription is required to access GTA Online, and that requirement is expected to remain when GTA 6 launches.

Some observers have noted that Sony may have chosen to move prices now with an eye on the flood of first-time PlayStation Plus subscribers expected to sign up specifically to play GTA 6’s online component later this year.

The broader financial picture at Sony adds context. The company has forecast a 6% decline in gaming revenue for the current financial year, projecting approximately 4.42 trillion yen, or roughly $28 billion, as softer hardware sales weigh on the business. Sony does expect gaming profit to grow by about 30%, driven by stronger first-party software sales, including the upcoming Insomniac Wolverine release.

PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers have not been adjusted, though many fans will be monitoring whether those prices follow a similar path in the months ahead.
