# Burnham Says He Would Keep UK Fiscal Rules Unchanged If Elected PM

07:23 PM EDT, 05/18/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Andy Burnham would keep the UK government's fiscal rules unchanged if he became prime minister, Bloomberg reported on Monday, citing a spokesperson for the current Greater Manchester mayor, who is currently standing for election to the UK's national parliament.

The spokesperson also ruled out exempting defense spending from the borrowing constraints set by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, according to Bloomberg.

UK government bonds extended gains after the comments, while the pound strengthened against the dollar as investors viewed the remarks as reassuring for markets concerned about higher public spending under a potential Burnham government.

Bloomberg reported that traders had viewed Burnham as a potential fiscal risk amid speculation he could pursue a more left-leaning agenda if he succeeded Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
