Chinese tech giant Xiaomi (HKEX: 1810) is bringing in new battery suppliers for its upcoming second auto brand, aiming to power its first extended-range sport utility vehicle (SUV) for families and further optimize its supply chain system.

Xiaomi has selected Sunwoda (SHE: 300207) and CALB (HKEX: 3931) as battery suppliers for its new model Kunlun, and in the current supply quota, Sunwoda will account for 60 percent, while CALB will take 40 percent, local media outlet 21jingji reported on Monday, citing multiple people familiar with the matter.

The new sub-brand, named Skynomad, will differentiate itself from the main Xiaomi EV brand. Its first model, internally codenamed Kunlun N3, is scheduled to be officially launched in the second half of 2026, the report said.

The vehicle is a full-size extended-range SUV measuring over 5.3 meters in length. It is expected to be equipped with a large battery pack exceeding 70 kWh, delivering a pure electric range of 400 to 500 kilometers, the report noted.

The main price range of the Skynomad brand is expected to drop to around 200,000 yuan ($29,450) to target a more cost-effective market segment, according to the report.

The Kunlun N3 will directly compete with popular family models such as Li Auto's (NASDAQ: LI) Li L9. Seven of the top 10 best-selling extended-range SUVs in China in 2025 were from Li Auto and Huawei-backed Aito, and all of these models were priced above 250,000 yuan, 21jingji noted.

The introduction of new suppliers reflects Xiaomi's strategic adjustment in supply chain management. For its existing SU7 and YU7 models, Xiaomi primarily relies on batteries from CATL (HKEX: 3750) and BYD (HKEX: 1211).

As of the end of April 2026, cumulative deliveries of Xiaomi EV approached 700,000 units, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Among these delivered vehicles, CATL's battery supply proportion exceeded 80 percent, the report cited a person familiar with Xiaomi EV's battery supply chain system as saying.

Xiaomi hopes to gain more initiative in its supply chain management. Battery suppliers other than CATL and BYD are generally more cooperative, 21jingji cited the person as saying.

Both Sunwoda and CALB hold significant market shares in the hybrid battery sector. Sunwoda's cumulative installed capacity of hybrid batteries has surpassed 1.5 million units, while CALB will also begin mass delivery of its hybrid battery products in 2026.

Competition in China's power battery market remains fierce. CATL maintained its top position in the domestic market with a 46.64% share in April 2026, while BYD ranked second with a 16.83% share, according to data released last week by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

CALB ranked fourth with a 6.26% share in April, and Sunwoda ranked ninth with a 2.40% share.

Earlier this month, several Chinese auto media outlets reported that Xiaomi might launch a second brand, Skynomad, to focus on the highly competitive family extended-range SUV market.

Spy shots of the extended-range SUV have been frequently exposed recently, though there is no definitive information yet on whether Skynomad will be an independent new brand or a product lineup.

Adding new models is a key component of Xiaomi's 2026 expansion plan. Xiaomi EV's single-month deliveries exceeded 30,000 units in April, and the company has set its full-year vehicle delivery target for 2026 at 550,000 units.
