They highlight ongoing risks of supply shocks affecting global inflation and growth. Central banks in Australia and Norway are already under inflationary pressure, with potential rate hikes from the European Central Bank and Bank of England in mid-year. HSBC also expects further rate increases in the Philippines, India, and Indonesia later this year." datetime: "2026-05-19T04:49:21.000Z" locales: - [zh-CN](https://longbridge.com/zh-CN/news/286855152.md) - [en](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286855152.md) - [zh-HK](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/286855152.md) --- # HSBC Economists Predict Continued Rate Hikes Despite Potential US-Iran Peace HSBC economists Janet Henry and Besson Ellis have indicated in a report that even if the United States and Iran reach a peace agreement in the short term, more central banks are expected to raise policy rates. According to Jin10, they noted that even with the rapid reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the risk of supply shocks and their impact on global inflation and growth will persist. The current rate hikes are more about maintaining credibility. Central banks in Australia and Norway were already facing inflationary pressures before the conflict and hope that the May rate hikes will be the last. The European Central Bank and the Bank of England may begin raising rates in June or July, and if the Federal Reserve increases rates, more emerging market economies might tighten their policies. HSBC expects the Philippines to further raise rates and anticipates that India and Indonesia will hike rates in the second half of the year. ### Related Stocks - [HSBC.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/HSBC.US.md) - [HSBA.UK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/HSBA.UK.md) - [00005.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/00005.HK.md) - [HSBH.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/HSBH.US.md) - [DTIW.SG](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/DTIW.SG.md) ## Related News & Research - [HSBC Sticks to Its Buy Rating for NWS Holdings (NWSZF)](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286628463.md) - [Key facts: HSBC prices $4.5bn notes; UK bill allows back office sharing](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286337364.md) - [Key facts: HSBC takes $400m Atlas‑SP loan charge; issues €3.5bn notes](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286175629.md) - [HSBC to lend $4 bln to help China clean tech scale globally](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286715126.md) - [HSBC launches $4B credit facility supporting global expansion of China’s low carbon industries](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286855217.md)
