Although the scale of this investment is relatively small, its significance is profound. This stake of approximately 3 million shares accounts for about 1.1% of Macy's total share capital. It is worth mentioning that this is the first time Berkshire has invested in a publicly listed department store since 1966. Back then, Warren Buffett and his partner Charlie Munger invested about $6 million through a company called Diversified Retail Companies to acquire the Baltimore-based department store chain Hochschild Kohn. However, Buffett sold the department store at nearly cost after three years of investment. Munger later candidly pointed out that the department store business is a "terrible business" because such operations often require continuous capital investment, but the profit margins are very low.
