Nissan is considering exporting vehicles produced by its joint venture with Chinese partner Dongfeng Motor to the Canadian market to tap into growing local demand for low-cost EVs, according to a Bloomberg report today.

This marks a move by the Japanese automaker to further expand the export reach of its Chinese production base from its current Latin American markets into North America.

The Canadian government has opened the door for some China-made products, and Nissan is currently studying this seriously, Christian Meunier, Nissan's head of the Americas, said in an interview.

While he did not specify which exact models would be part of this potential export initiative, he highlighted the significant advantages of the Chinese factories in terms of cost control and development cycles.

The Canadian government lifted its ban on China-made EVs in January this year, and currently allows up to 49,000 vehicles produced in China to enter the country's market annually.

This policy tailwind has already attracted competitors including Tesla, whose Shanghai plant has started supplying highly price-competitive Model 3 sedans to Canada.

Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa is working to boost the company's performance by accelerating product iterations and optimizing the supply chain.

The company's initial goal is to export 100,000 vehicles from China, with plans to eventually increase the export volume to 300,000 units annually by introducing more NEV models in the future, Bloomberg noted.

The first batch of models the company plans to export may include the N7 electric sedan and a pickup truck named Frontier Pro, which will first test the waters in the Latin American market, according to the report.

Nissan's joint venture in China, Dongfeng Nissan, has launched a new lineup of electrified products dubbed the N series, including the pure electric N7 sedan and the newly launched flagship SUV model NX8.

As Dongfeng Nissan's first model to offer an extended-range version, the NX8 garnered over 8,400 orders within just 30 minutes of its launch, driven by an aggressive pricing strategy.

The starting price of this mid to large-size SUV dropped to 149,900 yuan ($22,030) after limited-time incentives, significantly lower than the average selling price of electric SUVs in the same class in the North American market.
