# Instagram outage hits 6 major cities today

Thousands of Instagram users reported issues with the platform this afternoon, flooding outage tracking sites and raising widespread questions about whether the app was experiencing a broader failure.

By 11:59 a.m. PDT, more than 2,000 users had already flagged problems on Downdetector, the real-time outage monitoring service that collects status reports from multiple sources. The count more than doubled as the afternoon progressed, surpassing 4,000 reports and suggesting the disruption was far too widespread to be a localized or device-specific issue.

### **What users are experiencing**

The complaints pointed to problems with two of Instagram’s main access points. Users reported difficulty with both the mobile application and the desktop website, meaning the disruption was not isolated to one device type. Someone who cannot get Instagram to load on their phone is unlikely to find relief by switching to a laptop.

Downdetector’s geographic data showed that the bulk of reports were concentrated in six cities: 1. New York City, 2. Los Angeles, 3. San Francisco, 4. Dallas, 5. Chicago and 6. Washington, D.C. The concentration in those markets reflects where Instagram’s largest clusters of active users tend to be located, though the disruption is affecting accounts across the country.

### **What to do if Instagram is not loading for you**

The first useful step is to confirm the problem is not on your end. Checking Downdetector or searching social media for real-time complaints can quickly tell you whether the issue is platform-wide or isolated to your network or device.

If the outage is confirmed as a wider service disruption, most standard troubleshooting steps are unlikely to help. Clearing the app cache, restarting the device or reinstalling the application may occasionally resolve a connection hiccup, but they cannot fix a server-side problem affecting thousands of users at once. The practical answer in that situation is to wait for Meta’s engineers to address the issue on their end.

Users who need to stay active online during an extended outage can temporarily shift activity to other Meta-owned platforms like Facebook or Threads, or move content to alternative platforms while Instagram stabilizes.

### **Meta has not yet commented**

As of this afternoon, Meta had not issued a public statement about the reported outage or provided an estimated timeline for when service would be restored. USA TODAY confirmed it had reached out to Meta for comment. Companies do not always address outages publicly in real time, but larger disruptions typically prompt communication through official channels once the situation is better understood internally.

If the Downdetector report count continues to climb through the afternoon, a broader acknowledgment from Meta becomes more likely. Until then, the ongoing report count on outage trackers remains the clearest real-time signal of whether the situation is improving or worsening.

Instagram has experienced disruptions before, as have other major social platforms. Most outages of this scale are resolved within hours. For now, the most reliable approach for affected users is to monitor outage trackers and Meta’s official accounts for any updates as the afternoon continues.
