# Rio Tinto Achieves Eight Billion-Ton Pilbara Iron Ore Shipment Milestone

05:27 PM EDT, 05/19/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Rio Tinto (RIO) said late Tuesday it has shipped its eight billionth ton of iron ore from Western Australia's Pilbara region.

The milestone cargo departed from the Cape Lambert port aboard the Juno Horizon, bound for longtime partner Nippon Steel.

Rio Tinto also said it is advancing studies at the Rhodes Ridge iron ore project, in which it holds a 50% stake. The site could eventually produce 100 million tons of high-quality iron ore annually, helping Rio Tinto maintain its mid-term regional capacity goal of 345 million to 360 million tons per year.
