# "Gods Clash"! Google teams up with Samsung and Warby Parker to enter the AI audio glasses market, expected to be officially released this fall

According to Zhitong Finance APP, Google showcased its first audio smart glasses for the first time on Tuesday, attempting to break into the wearable device segment that has already stirred waves with competitors like Meta. At Google's annual I/O developer conference, the company announced collaborations with Samsung and eyewear manufacturers Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to create smart glasses equipped with the built-in Gemini assistant. Google stated that the product will be compatible with both Android and iOS devices and will officially launch later this year.

In 2013, Google was the first to enter the smart glasses market with Google Glass; however, its high price of $1,500 and bulky appearance ultimately led to the product becoming one of the failures in tech history. Thirteen years later, Google has learned from its painful lessons and established a multi-layered hardware and design alliance.

For this design, Google chose to collaborate with the avant-garde Korean brand Gentle Monster and the North American direct-to-consumer eyewear brand Warby Parker, each handling the "bold avant-garde" and "minimalist classic" frame designs, respectively. The goal is to make the smart glasses look like regular glasses first—directly addressing the biggest aesthetic flaw of Google Glass back in the day.

"This is one of the first two designs in a larger product series set to launch this fall," said Shahram Izadi, head of Google's Android XR products and platforms, during the keynote speech at the conference. He introduced that these glasses are designed to "privately read information into the user's ear rather than displaying it on a screen."

On the hardware front, Google has incorporated Samsung's hardware engineering capabilities and Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform solutions, leveraging the latter's deep expertise in consumer electronics manufacturing and chip development to ensure mass production and quality control.

This product runs on the Android XR operating system and deeply integrates the Gemini 2.5 Pro large model, supporting functions such as photography, voice navigation, real-time translation, and SMS summarization. Meanwhile, Google has simultaneously launched a developer ecosystem plan for display smart glasses, with a complete version featuring a micro LED display expected to be available to consumers by 2027. This phased product roadmap of "audio first, display later" aims to test the market with a lower barrier to entry.

In contrast to Meta's strategy, Google is focusing on a screenless audio version, emphasizing "privately reading information into the ear rather than displaying it on a screen," and attempting to overtake the competition through a triad of stylish design, manufacturing capabilities, and AI platform.

During Tuesday's event, Google also released a series of AI-related advancements, including new AI models and AI agents.

This debut indicates that, amid uncertainties about the future of wearable devices and investors eagerly awaiting new hardware forms in the AI era, Google is still willing to make cautious bets on new devices. Last year, Google released smart display glasses and stated in December that it was developing pure audio glasses for its Android XR platform.

For Google, user data is the true source of value—usable for continuously optimizing AI models. However, the company has not clarified the privacy terms related to the upcoming glasses

## Tech Giants Hunting for AI Glasses

Data shows that the global wearable AI market size is expected to grow from USD 52.65 billion in 2025 to USD 69.03 billion in 2026, with a compound annual growth rate of 31.1%; the global user base is projected to surge from 15 million last year to 289 million by 2040, with a market value reaching USD 200 billion.

In the field of AI glasses, the smart glasses launched by Meta in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica have achieved initial success, becoming a highlight amid the billions of dollars burned by Meta Reality Labs each quarter. The Ray-Ban and Oakley series glasses equipped with the Meta AI digital assistant are expected to sell 7 million units by 2025. In September last year, Meta released its own display glasses, allowing users to view messages, photo previews, and real-time subtitles through a small display embedded in the lenses.

According to the latest reports from foreign media, Apple has shifted its R&D focus from Vision Pro to lightweight smart glasses, with core R&D personnel from the original visual products department reassigned to this project team. The first product is expected to be unveiled by the end of 2026, but official shipments may be delayed until 2027. Reports suggest that the initial model may not have a built-in display and will rely on interaction with the iPhone.

Snap has officially established a wholly-owned subsidiary, Specs, at the beginning of 2026 to independently operate its smart glasses business and signed a multi-year cooperation agreement with Qualcomm in April to enhance chip capabilities. Snap expects to launch consumer-grade smart glasses within 2026 and has begun global talent recruitment.

Alibaba also showcased its Tongyi AI glasses for the first time at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, supporting voice interaction and real-time translation, with plans to promote them in international markets by 2026. The investment layout of AI chip leader Nvidia is also worth noting.

During the demonstration session at the conference on Tuesday, Google product manager Nishtha Bhatia showcased how to use these audio sunglasses to wake up Gemini, connect to DoorDash, and complete a coffee order. She also had Gemini read out summaries of unread text messages and added events to the calendar.

Google stated in its official blog that the glasses can provide turn-by-turn voice navigation, and users can ask Gemini about everything they see. Additionally, the glasses support photo-taking functionality and can use Google's AI image generator Nano Banana to transform images with prompts like "Hey Google, take a picture and put funny hats on everyone."
