More than 47,000 workers are set to begin an 18-day strike on Thursday, May 21, raising concerns about possible disruption to the global semiconductor supply chain. ### Claim 55% Off TipRanks - Unlock hedge fund-level data and powerful investing tools for smarter, sharper decisions - Discover top-performing stock ideas and upgrade to a portfolio of market leaders with Smart Investor Picks After the failed negotiations, Samsung Electronics' shares listed on the Korea Exchange fell about 3% on Wednesday. The dispute centers on Samsung's performance-based bonus system. While the union accepted the government's final mediation proposal, Samsung management rejected it after asking for more time, causing the talks to collapse. Meanwhile, Union leader Choi Seung-ho said the strike will move forward as planned, though the union is still willing to continue discussions. ## **Why Are Samsung Workers Striking?** The union is demanding major changes to Samsung's bonus structure. Its key demands include setting aside 15% of Samsung's annual operating profit for employee bonuses and removing the current bonus cap, which is limited to 50% of annual salary. Workers also want Samsung to formalize the new bonus structure and guarantee payouts for employees in loss-making business units. Samsung pushed back against the demands, saying they were too aggressive and could hurt the company's management system. ## **Why Investors Are Watching Closely** Samsung is the world's largest memory chip maker and accounts for nearly one-quarter of South Korea's exports. Any major disruption at the company could affect global semiconductor supply at a time when demand for AI chips and data center hardware remains strong. Investors are also watching closely because Samsung plays a key role in the global electronics supply chain, supplying chips used in smartphones, servers, and AI systems. ## **Government May Step In** South Korean officials have urged both sides to continue talks and avoid a prolonged strike. Prime Minister Kim Min-seok recently warned that the government could use emergency measures if the labor action threatens the broader economy. Under South Korean law, the labor minister can temporarily suspend industrial action for 30 days through an "emergency adjustment" order if the dispute is considered harmful to the national economy. At the same time, a South Korean court has already ruled that the strike cannot interfere with safety operations or damage semiconductor manufacturing facilities, limiting how much production can be disrupted during the walkout. ## **Is Samsung Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?** Wall Street has a Moderate Buy consensus rating for shares of Samsung Electronics listed over-the-counter (OTC) in the U.S. The average SSNLF stock price target of $149.40 indicates 6.71% upside potential. SSNLF stock has surged about 115% year-to-date. ### Related Stocks - [SMSN.UK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SMSN.UK.md) - [SSNGY.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SSNGY.US.md) - [SOXX.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SOXX.US.md) - [SMH.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SMH.US.md) - [SOXL.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SOXL.US.md) - [XSD.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/XSD.US.md) ## Related News & Research - [EXPLAINER-What are Samsung union workers demanding and how might a strike play out?](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286892020.md) - [Samsung, labour union meet again as Seoul threatens to intervene to block strike](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286837316.md) - [Samsung Faces Strike As Union Rejects Contract Offer](https://longbridge.com/en/news/287080718.md) - [Samsung Electronics Management, Union Resume Talks to Avoid Strike — Update](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286747994.md) - [Samsung halts chip inputs as strike talks near deadline](https://longbridge.com/en/news/286682398.md)
