Are Samsung's problems helping? By Hannah Pedone A looming strike by Samsung workers could further tighten memory supply and boost prices, analysts say Analysts say an expected strike at Samsung Electronics could boost Micron's stock. Samsung Electronics labor unions are preparing to stage an 18-day strike on Thursday, and that's a good thing for Micron, analysts say. Shares of Micron (MU) popped on Wednesday morning and were recently up 2%, after reports emerged that roughly 48,000 Samsung (KR:005930) workers plan to strike following the collapse of talks between management and labor unions. The impact on the already constrained memory market could be severe, and Micron might see benefits beyond a temporary shock, according to analysts. Because the supply-demand gap for memory is "already a big problem," a 15- to 20-day production disruption at Samsung could send spot prices even higher and benefit Micron, Itau BBA analyst Stephano Gabriel told MarketWatch. "The main benefit would be capturing a higher share of future orders (or a price premium), because supply-chain stability is paramount for hyperscalers building out AI data centers," he said in written comments. Baptista Research analyst Ishan Majumdar told MarketWatch that Micron investors today aren't solely looking at the impact of a "temporary disruption" at Samsung. They're also considering the "broader AI memory upcycle," whereby scarcity of high-bandwidth memory and stronger pricing could benefit Micron into 2027, he said. He also noted that Micron appears to be "targeting" talent in the high-bandwidth memory market in Korea as Samsung grapples with labor tensions. "That suggests Micron is trying to strengthen its position in the AI memory ecosystem, not just benefit passively from a shortage," he said. Korean media have reported that Micron has been ramping up recruiting in Seoul. An18-day strike could further exacerbate tight memory supply, Wedbush analyst Matt Bryson wrote in a note on Monday. However, he noted that a recent South Korean court ruling that could force some workers to continue working during the strike might dampen the effects of the memory crunch.
