# "…Very Successful Trip to China" Boeing Stock (NYSE:BA) Gains as Chinese Sale Confirmed

Aerospace stock Boeing (BA) made the disappointing deal official: the Chinese have placed an order for 200 planes, in a move that let down a lot of observers who were looking for Boeing to make a sale that was better than double that. However, Boeing did also leave the door open for future sales, and that bit of optimism may have made the difference. Boeing investors seemed buoyed by the news, and shares gained over 2% in Wednesday afternoon's trading.

China recently confirmed the deal as well. The Commerce Ministry in China noted that China would not only buy aircraft, but that the United States would offer up "…guarantees for aircraft engine parts and components." The deal also came as part of larger overtures toward trying to get tariff cuts on over $30 billion worth of goods on each side.

Both Boeing and President Trump seemed optimistic about future sales, with Trump noting that the 200 planes sold also came with "…a promise of 750 planes, which would be by far the largest order ever." Boeing rang a note of assent, saying, "This included an initial commitment for 200 aircraft and we expect further commitments will follow after this initial tranche." At the end of the day, however, a bird on the tarmac is worth promises for several more.

## **Rejected 777Xs**

Bad news recently emerged for Boeing, though, as the 777X is starting to develop some issues. Airlines are refusing delivery on the early-build "inventory" models of the 777X as many of these have been in storage for the last several years. While Boeing did know that modifications would have to be made to get the 777X models flight-ready, airlines are not interested in flying what amounts to modified antiques.

Parallels are being drawn between the 777X's issues and the 787 Dreamliners, which also proved tough to sell at anything less than big discounts. The 777X line is said to require such extensive reworking that airlines simply do not want to take the chance on them. With earlier reports from Boeing itself suggesting the change incorporation process could take years, it is small wonder airlines would rather wait for the new ones.

## **Is Boeing a Good Stock to Buy Right Now?**

Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on BA stock based on 15 Buys and one Hold assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 5.81% rally in its share price over the past year, the average BA price target of $274.14 per share implies 23.43% upside potential.
