# Gas now tops $4 in all 50 states, DC: AAA

The average price of a gallon of regular gas is over $4 in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., according to AAA, as the U.S. war against Iran nears the three-month mark.

Oil and gas prices have spiked as the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for the oil industry, has been effectively closed during the war, which started on Feb. 28 and is currently under an indefinite ceasefire. The current average price for a gallon of regular gas in the U.S. is about $4.56, per AAA, with Western states being some of the hardest hit when it comes to prices at the pump.

California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Hawaii and Alaska all had the average cost of a regular gallon of gas above $5 as of Wednesday afternoon, per AAA, with California topping $6.

Lower prices were mostly concentrated around the Southeast, with Georgia having the lowest average cost for a regular gallon of gas in the U.S. at about $4.01.

President Trump has proposed pausing the federal gas tax as the war drives up fuel prices, but the idea faces a large hurdle in Congress, with top Republicans hesitant about the proposal.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) restated his concerns over high gas prices on Sunday, with Republicans aiming to keep their slim majority in the lower chamber in the fall.

In a Sunday interview, Johnson said “economic trouble” Americans have been dealing with is “related directly to the Strait of Hormuz.”

“Really, all points lead back to that,” he said, discussing the strait. “Gas prices are too high because of that, and then that has an effect on how goods are transported to the grocery store and all the rest.”
