# Samsung Strike, Micron Poaches Talent

Labor unrest at Samsung has not yet subsided, while Micron has quietly begun positioning itself in Seoul to recruit talent.

According to reports from Business Korea and other media, **Micron recently launched recruitment for HBM design roles in South Korea, directly targeting top semiconductor talent potentially leaving due to tense labor relations at Samsung.** This move is seen as a strategic layout by Micron to catch up with competitors in the HBM4 race.

Although Samsung has temporarily averted the risk of a full-scale strike, analysts warn that the intangible damage to South Korea's manufacturing credibility caused by this labor dispute cannot be repaired in the short term. Overseas customers may need to prepare for potential supply disruptions, while competitors stand to benefit.

## Micron Recruits in Seoul, Salaries Reach Up to 300 Million South Korean Won

Reports indicate that Micron recently posted several HBM design positions in South Korea, including "Staff HBM Design Architect" and "Principal HBM Design Architect," with work locations based in Seoul.

Judging from the job descriptions, **these roles focus on next-generation HBM R&D, covering core tasks such as DRAM circuit design, power, area, and speed optimization, architecture review, and functional verification.** Micron explicitly stated in its recruitment announcements that these positions aim to develop HBM solutions for AI, machine learning, and high-performance computing applications. Hires will also participate in the R&D of core AI memory technologies, including Through-Silicon Via (TSV) based 3D stacking, power optimization, and high-speed interfaces.

Regarding qualifications, the Staff level requires a relevant bachelor's degree and at least three years of semiconductor design experience; the Principal level requires five to seven years of circuit design experience (depending on education), indicating a higher threshold clearly targeting senior technical talent.

In terms of compensation, industry insiders estimate that based on US salary standards, the annual salary for the Staff level is approximately 100 million to 150 million South Korean won (about $66,700 to $100,000); **the Principal level, including performance-based pay, can reach an annual salary of about 300 million South Korean won (approximately RMB 1.355 million)**, along with additional bonuses and stock incentives.

## Lagging in HBM4, Micron Seeks to Strengthen Talent Shortcomings

TrendForce analysis points out that Micron is currently lagging behind competitors in the HBM4 race and is actively seeking to catch up, viewing Samsung's recent labor turmoil as a strategic window to attract top talent.

Given the high complexity of HBM production and its strong reliance on specialized technical talent, analysts believe that **Micron's direct recruitment of experienced engineers in Seoul is a reasonable and necessary step to strengthen its competitive position.**

Notably, Micron is not the only overseas company targeting the South Korean talent market. Reports state that Tesla has also been actively recruiting semiconductor process engineers in Seoul this year for its Terafab-related business.

## Samsung Averts Strike, but Credibility Damage Hard to Heal Quickly

Although Samsung avoided a full-scale strike this time, the potential cost is not insignificant. According to FNnews, industry estimates suggest that if the strike had lasted 18 days, it could have caused direct and indirect losses of up to 100 trillion South Korean won, while reducing global DRAM supply by 3% to 4% and NAND supply by 2% to 3%.

Although an agreement has been reached, analysts point out that **the credibility South Korea's manufacturing sector has long built on timely delivery of high-quality products is now facing external skepticism.** This incident has triggered concerns among overseas customers regarding supply stability, from which competitors may benefit. Analysts state that restoring intangible assets such as credibility and brand image will take far longer than resolving the labor dispute itself.
