# Airbnb aims to be the "Amazon of the travel industry": launching hotels, car rentals, and grocery delivery to create an integrated super app

According to Zhitong Finance APP, Airbnb (ABNB.US) announced on Wednesday that it will add thousands of boutique and independent hotels, car rentals, grocery delivery, airport transfers, and luggage storage services to its app, marking a significant expansion of its business beyond its initial positioning as a home rental market.

The company stated that hotel listings will not include large chain hotels and will launch in 20 cities, including New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, and Singapore, with plans to cover more locations in the future. Guests booking unique hotels will receive up to 15% cashback, which can be used for future Airbnb stays; additionally, if users find lower prices elsewhere, Airbnb's "price match guarantee" will compensate the difference in the form of Airbnb credits.

New services also include grocery delivery in over 25 U.S. cities through a partnership with Instacart; car rental services with a 20% cashback for first-time users for future stays; airport transfer services in over 160 cities worldwide through Welcome Pickups; and luggage storage services at over 15,000 locations in 175 cities through Bounce.

Co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky stated in a statement, "Travel should not just be about convenience; it should be meaningful," adding, "The best trips help you explore, learn, and come home a little different than when you left."

Chesky told the media that he envisions the platform eventually offering dozens or even hundreds of service categories. He said, "I think we can build a platform that is somewhat like 'the Amazon of services,' at least in the travel and living space." He also mentioned in an interview that the ultimate goal of the platform is to become "the all-in-one app for travel and living," with the app itself eventually functioning as an AI agent.

The release also includes new AI features: a review summary tool, an AI customer support assistant that now supports 11 languages, and a shared itinerary feature that marks booking information on a map while displaying nearby restaurants and activities. The company stated that they also plan to launch an AI-based property comparison tool and a voice assistant for customer support later this year.

Airbnb will also offer FIFA World Cup experience events covering six host cities in 2026, including viewing parties and training camps with former players Abby Wambach, Julie Foudy, and Javier Mascherano.

Analysts pointed out that this move into new business areas comes at a time when local governments are placing increasing pressure on Airbnb's core home rental model. In December last year, Spain fined the company €65 million (approximately $75 million); Barcelona has decided not to renew its rental license set to expire in 2028; and New York has implemented a near-total ban on short-term private rentals since 2023.

The company's first-quarter revenue was $2.68 billion, an 18% year-over-year increase, and the company has raised its full-year revenue guidance. The company stated that the FIFA World Cup is expected to be the largest single event in its history in terms of guest traffic, with over 100,000 new listings added to the host city market since October
