# WWDC Preview: Siri to Undergo Complete Overhaul with Standalone App and Gemini Foundation; Apple's AI Moment of Truth Approaches

Apple may completely overhaul Siri from the ground up.

Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will kick off on June 8. **This time, what the outside world is waiting for is not just a new feature, but whether Apple can deliver on the AI promises it made in 2024.**

In an Apple preview research note released on June 3, JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee pointed out that **the core highlight of this WWDC is the comprehensive restructuring ("material overhaul") of Siri. Apple also rarely disclosed an "AI advancements" agenda in this year's WWDC schedule**—analysts interpret this as Apple's confidence in the timely implementation of these upgrades, differing from the previously vague release timelines.

As expected, **the revamped Siri will appear as a standalone app, functionally comparable to chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, supporting multi-turn conversations. The Dynamic Island is expected to feature a permanent "Search or Ask" entry point, allowing users to invoke Siri at any time.** More importantly, Siri may replace Spotlight as the global search entry point for the iPhone—meaning that every time users search for anything at the system level, they will go through Siri.

There are also significant changes in the underlying architecture. Previously, Apple's AI architecture consisted of its own proprietary models as the foundation, with ChatGPT as the only "plug-in" option. **The new framework may resemble an AI query distribution platform—users can freely choose which model to send their questions to, much like selecting a default search engine in Safari. If expectations are met, Gemini will transition from a supporting role to the foundation.**

Meanwhile, excitement is building for the fall product lineup: the foldable iPhone and touchscreen MacBook are set to debut, coupled with substantial AI feature upgrades, raising market expectations for Apple's second-half product cycle.

## **What Will Siri Become This Time?**

As expected, the revamped Siri will appear as a standalone app, functionally comparable to chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, supporting multi-turn conversations.

**At the same time, the Dynamic Island is expected to feature a permanent "Search or Ask" entry point, allowing users to invoke Siri at any time.** More importantly, Siri may replace Spotlight as the global search entry point for the iPhone—meaning that every time users search for anything at the system level, they will go through Siri.

Analysts expect several specific functional upgrades for Siri:

- **Cross-app multi-step commands**: A single sentence can trigger continuous operations across multiple apps, truly enabling "agent-style" task execution.

- **Screen awareness**: Siri can read content currently displayed on the screen and combine it with user personal data to answer questions.

- **Visual Intelligence Camera Mode**: Use the camera to identify objects in the real world and trigger related actions.

- **AI Photo Editing**: Editing capabilities in the Photos app will receive significant upgrades.

## **Gemini Takes the Lead, ChatGPT's Status Diluted**

Over the past year, Apple's partnership with OpenAI was viewed by outsiders as the core pillar of Apple's AI strategy. However, based on the expected announcements at WWDC, this landscape may change.

Gemini is expected to become the foundational model underlying Siri, while ChatGPT will retreat to a position alongside other third-party models—users can choose it, but it will no longer be the default external routing option.

The logic behind this new architecture is that Apple acts as the platform, allowing whichever model performs best to run, without Apple betting on any single provider. For Google, this represents significant penetration; for OpenAI, its exclusive advantage is disappearing; for Apple, this is a strategic move to establish AI capabilities as infrastructure.

## **Fall Product Lineup: Foldable Screen is the Highlight, Pricing is the Suspense**

On the hardware side, the product lineup for the second half of this year is more compelling than in previous years.

The foldable iPhone is the biggest new variety. This is Apple's first introduction of a foldable form factor, and the market generally expects it to drive a wave of upgrade cycles. Meanwhile, iOS 27 is expected to be specifically optimized for the foldable screen—with dual-column app layouts, iPad-like multitasking modes, and new sidebar designs all customized for this new screen.

The touchscreen MacBook is also worth noting. macOS 27 will introduce a touch-friendly interface and integrate the Dynamic Island into the MacBook.

However, one detail is worth noting: the standard version (base model) of the iPhone 18 is not expected to be released until the first quarter of 2027. The Pro and Pro Max models, along with the foldable version, will launch in the fall. This staggered release rhythm will objectively push users toward higher-end models.

Pricing is the biggest uncertainty. Persistent memory costs continue to pressure the cost side, and Apple may raise prices for the iPhone 18 series by approximately $50 (about RMB 360) to protect profit margins. This figure is not insignificant, and the market is still observing consumer acceptance.

## **Historical Pattern: Apple Stock Typically Outperforms the Market During This Window**

Data shows that Apple's stock performance has been quite stable historically from the period around WWDC to the fall product launches.

Over the past decade (2016 to 2025), Apple outperformed the S&P 500 Index in most years from early June to mid-September, with an average excess return of about 11%. So far this year, Apple's year-to-date stock price increase has also exceeded the broader market.

The logic driving this pattern is that expectations continue to accumulate before product launches; and this year there are more variables—the form factor innovation of the foldable iPhone, the substantial restructuring of Siri, and the debut of the touchscreen Mac, combined, give the market more room for imagination.

Of course, risks are real. Whether AI features can be implemented on schedule, whether the quality control and pricing of the foldable screen will be accepted by consumers, and whether the price increase strategy will hurt shipment volumes—these questions remain unanswered. Any slip-ups in execution could interrupt the logic of this window period.
