> - Xpeng is adding production lines for key GX SUV components as strong initial demand for the top-trim versions pushes delivery wait times up to 35 weeks.
> - The flagship model, with a starting price of 269,800 yuan ($39,900), is a key driver for Xpeng to reverse its sales slump this year.

Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) is stepping up efforts to ease production bottlenecks for its latest flagship GX SUV (sport utility vehicle), as robust demand for the new model has led to months-long delivery waits for certain trims.

He Xiaopeng, chairman and CEO of the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, said in an online livestream on Wednesday that he is currently pushing the GX supply chain to boost production capacity to meet market demand.

Mr. He said that he and the company's president, Wang Fengying, are personally overseeing the supply chain, striving to do their utmost to alleviate capacity pressures and hoping to shorten the delivery cycle in the next two to four weeks.

The large six-seat SUV officially launched on May 20, offering a highly competitive limited-time starting price of 269,800 yuan ($39,900), along with battery electric vehicle (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain options.

Through this aggressive pricing strategy, Xpeng is attempting to grab a larger share of the mid-to-high-end family user market.

The GX garnered 24,863 firm orders within the first 12 hours of its launch, with over 80% of the initial orders concentrated on the top-trim Ultra flagship versions priced from 359,800 yuan, according to figures shared by the company last month.

This heavy skew toward the high-end version has caused immense pressure on the supply chain, and the delivery cycle for the top-trim BEV version of the GX has now reached a staggering 35 weeks.

To resolve this issue, Xpeng's team has focused on key manufacturing processes over the past ten days or so, establishing new molds and production lines for core components to boost output, Mr. He said.

The Xpeng CEO explained that there are two main reasons for the lengthy delivery cycle: first, too many consumers chose the flagship version, and second, the company needed to confirm the overall process before shortening the expected delivery time.

For family customers looking to take delivery as soon as possible, Xpeng executives recommend the Ultra SE trim — the second-most expensive of the model's four trims. The wait time for this trim is about 7 to 10 weeks, and supply is relatively ample.

The GX is built to L4 autonomous driving standards, with the high-end versions equipped with three of Xpeng's in-house developed Turing AI chips, boasting 2,250 TOPS of computing power and supporting a LiDAR-free, pure-vision solution.

The new model is crucial for boosting Xpeng's sales this year. In the first five months of this year, Xpeng delivered a total of 125,851 vehicles, representing a 22.59% decline from the same period last year.

With the GX beginning mass deliveries in June, it is expected to improve Xpeng's position in the fiercely competitive Chinese market.

Beyond the domestic Chinese market, the GX has also shown greater-than-expected popularity overseas.

Since its public debut at the Beijing Auto Show in late April, the model has secured 1,000 pre-orders in overseas markets such as the Middle East, even though overseas pricing has not yet been announced.

Xpeng plans to gradually roll out the GX to overseas markets, starting with pre-sales in the Middle East. However, the company's top priority at present remains focusing on domestic deliveries.

The company said that the capacity ramp-up will not come at the expense of quality, noting that the total number of inspection items for the GX vehicle is more than 200 higher than the industry average.

Analysts say aggressive pricing of GX boosts Xpeng's May orders to 50,000

Deutsche Bank expects Xpeng's total new orders this month to surge 40% from April, thanks to strong initial demand for the GX.
