# Apple WWDC 2026: Siri AI Arrives Late, Apple Intelligence Gets Comprehensive Upgrade, OSes Enter Version 27 Era, Stock Turns Lower Intraday

On Monday, June 8, Eastern Time, Apple held its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), officially launching the next-generation Apple Intelligence platform and unveiling the highly anticipated AI-powered voice assistant, Siri. The company aimed to demonstrate to investors and developers that its AI strategy has returned to the right track.

Tim Cook, the Apple CEO who will step down this fall, stated at the outset of WWDC 2026: "Today, we look forward to sharing some exciting news, including our latest progress in Apple Intelligence and Siri." His remarks indicated that Apple has not abandoned the brand name for its personal intelligence system, Apple Intelligence.

In addition to AI features taking center stage, Apple announced a unified upgrade of its major operating systems to the "Version 27 Era," releasing a series of software updates including iOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27. Meanwhile, the Liquid Glass design language, debuted last year, received further improvements.

However, the capital market's reaction was not enthusiastic. After WWDC began, Apple's stock initially hit a daily high, rising nearly 3.3% intraday. But as the presentation progressed, gains narrowed and eventually turned into losses, with the decline widening during the announcement of Siri AI. When Apple mentioned that the new Siri would not immediately launch in the EU and Chinese markets, the stock fell 1.2% intraday. After the event concluded, the decline widened further, closing down approximately 1.9%.

The stock performance indicates that the market remains cautious about Apple's ability to catch up with competitors like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic in AI. Media outlets pointed out that investors' primary concern is whether Apple can truly deliver on the vision outlined when Apple Intelligence was released two years ago. Many features demonstrated at this event overlapped with capabilities previously announced but delayed by Apple, leading investors to maintain modest expectations.

For Apple, the significance of WWDC 2026 lies less in the number of new features introduced and more in sending a signal to the market: after two years of AI strategy progress falling short of expectations, Apple is finally presenting a relatively complete AI product suite. The new Apple Intelligence, Siri, and Visual Intelligence collectively form the core framework of Apple's future AI ecosystem, while the operating systems, uniformly entering the "Version 27 Era," provide a unified carrier for these capabilities.

Compared to the leading advantages already established by OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, Apple's move appears more like catching up rather than redefining the industry. In the coming year, the actual performance of the new Siri, the global rollout speed of Apple Intelligence, and the development of the developer ecosystem will become key indicators determining the success or failure of Apple's AI strategy.

## Apple Intelligence Receives Biggest Upgrade; Siri Undergoes Largest Overhaul in 15 Years

The most important announcement at this WWDC was undoubtedly the comprehensive upgrade of Apple Intelligence.

Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, revealed in his keynote that the new generation of Apple Intelligence will better understand the context of user requests, possessing stronger contextual understanding capabilities. It can combine emails, calendars, photos, messages, and app content from user devices to more accurately interpret user intent.

The new version of Siri, named Siri AI, became the core of this upgrade. Apple stated that the new Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence technology, will become "smarter, more knowledgeable, and more capable," able to understand users' personal contexts and the functions of various apps—thus fulfilling the Siri improvement plan promised as early as 2024.

Apple described this as the most significant upgrade since Siri's launch in 2011. Federighi stated, "We rebuilt Siri from the core with powerful AI."

The new Siri AI can integrate user personal content (emails, photos, messages, etc.), on-screen awareness, app actions, and real-time web knowledge to complete multi-step tasks across apps.

Apple stated that Siri AI will initially support English, with rapid expansion to more languages in the future. However, its first version will still launch in beta form this fall. Siri AI and many new AI features will not yet be available in the Chinese market. A beta version of Siri AI will be released later this year, initially not launching in the EU market.

Notably, some capabilities of the new Apple Intelligence will leverage external AI model support. Apple emphasized that user privacy remains a priority, with the majority of computations performed on-device and complex tasks handled via Private Cloud Compute.

## Apple Discloses for First Time: Google Gemini Technology Integrated into Apple Intelligence Infrastructure

One of the most noteworthy technical details of this press conference was Apple's first confirmation that the new Apple Intelligence is built on deep cooperation with Google.

Federighi stated:

> "This year, we are collaborating deeply with Google, leveraging the technology behind the Gemini model family to jointly build the next generation of Apple Foundation Models."

Apple stated that the new models support both on-device execution and Private Cloud Compute, possessing stronger reasoning capabilities, multimodal understanding, and image generation abilities.

This disclosure also explains why some Wall Street analysts believe Apple's current strategy is more about leveraging its ecosystem advantage to integrate the most advanced AI capabilities rather than relying entirely on self-developed large language models.

## Siri Supports Continuous Conversation and Complex Task Planning; New Standalone App Syncs History Across Devices

Apple stated that a major improvement to Siri is support for two-way conversations between users and Siri. Apple highlighted the "Conversational Experience" of the new Siri.

Unlike the old Siri, which executed single commands, users can now engage in continuous dialogue around a topic.

For example, in a demonstration, a user first queried the World Cup schedule, then asked Siri to design a viewing party menu, search for dessert suggestions in family chat records, and finally automatically generate a group chat invitation.

Apple believes this marks Siri's transition from a "command executor" to a "task collaborator."

Apple also announced the launch of a standalone Siri app. This was new content not leaked by media prior to the event. Users can view conversation history and sync session records across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro via iCloud.

In the demonstration, after a user asked for information about the World Cup, they could swipe down on the interface to bring up a new text input box to view more related information, such as match details. Additionally, Siri's responses have become more detailed.

Apple stated that with Siri AI, users can request detailed plans, interact creatively during brainstorming sessions, and obtain feedback on documents. Apple also mentioned that Siri is equipped with a new voice featuring improved audio quality.

Apple introduced that the new Siri can not only understand continuous conversations and complex task requests but also perform more operations across apps. Compared to previous versions, its response style is closer to current mainstream AI chatbots.

Media reports previously indicated that this effectively means Apple is transforming Siri from a traditional voice assistant into a true AI chatbot platform.

## Apple's AI Is Not for AI's Sake, But to Deeply Integrate into Users' Daily Scenarios

As Apple's software chief, Craig Federighi stated at the press conference that this year's software updates focus on three directions: product responsiveness and ease of use, security and child protection, and significant upgrades to Apple Intelligence.

Federighi particularly emphasized that Apple does not agree with the development path of "AI for AI's sake." He said:

## Visual Intelligence Upgraded from Image Recognition Tool to AI Visual Assistant

Following last year's launch of Visual Intelligence, Apple further expanded this feature this year.

The new Visual Intelligence can not only identify objects seen by the user's camera but also analyze screen content and provide richer information and operational suggestions based on what is seen.

For example, when a user sees restaurant information, they can directly access reviews, navigation, and reservation functions; when seeing an event poster, it can automatically recognize the time and location and add it to the calendar.

Apple hopes to build an experience similar to a "real-time visual search assistant" through Visual Intelligence, enabling devices to understand the user's current environment.

This feature is seen by the market as Apple's significant response to Google Lens and OpenAI's multimodal capabilities.

Apple has actually deeply integrated Visual Intelligence with the new Siri.

The newly added "Siri Mode" can be directly integrated into the Camera app. Users simply need to lift their phone to let Siri recognize the scene in front of them and execute operations.

The press conference demonstration showed that Visual Intelligence can: analyze meal calories; automatically split bills; identify landmark locations; parse schedule information and add it to the calendar; determine if luggage meets airline carry-on standards; and recognize the size of real-world objects for matching recommendations.

Compared to last year's focus on image recognition, this year's Visual Intelligence has moved towards becoming a "visual agent."

## Liquid Glass Continues to Evolve: Apple Responds to User Complaints

The Liquid Glass design language, debuted last year, underwent its first major adjustment this year.

After Apple released Liquid Glass last year, many users and developers provided feedback that its transparency effects affected text readability. Therefore, Apple focused on optimizing visual clarity and information hierarchy display this time.

Apple's design team rarely responded directly at WWDC. The design lead stated, "We listened carefully to feedback from users and developers."

Apple readjusted the underlying rendering logic of Liquid Glass to more effectively blur background content and improve the readability of foreground text. It also added a transparency slider, allowing users to freely adjust the display effect of the glass texture between "ultra-transparent" and "fully tinted." For instance, a global slider was introduced in the new macOS to adjust the transparency of the Liquid Glass UI effect.

Apple stated that the new Liquid Glass will achieve a better balance, improving readability while retaining dynamic visual effects.

This change reflects Apple's search for a new balance between design innovation and practicality. To some extent, this is also a rare instance in recent years of Apple quickly responding to user feedback and adjusting its core design direction.

## Comprehensive Upgrades to iOS 27, macOS 27, etc.: Apple Ecosystem Enters "Version 27 Era"

Another important change at this conference was Apple's unification of its operating system naming convention.

-   iOS 27

iOS 27 further strengthens AI integration with the system, supporting all iPhone devices from iPhone 11 and later.

Major upgrades include: deep integration of Siri with system apps; enhanced search capabilities; upgraded AI writing tools; faster photo and app loading speeds; and strengthened child safety features.

A significant change in iOS 27 is the introduction of a transparency adjustment slider for the "Liquid Glass" effect launched in iOS 26. In iOS 27, users can adjust the glass texture of elements like the tab bar using the new slider. Apple also promised that iOS 27 will bring smoother system animations and shorter app loading times. The new search architecture will also achieve near real-time indexing of new content.

-   macOS 27 Golden Gate

Apple announced the next generation of macOS named Golden Gate: macOS Golden Gate 27. Apple typically names new macOS versions after California landmarks, and this year's macOS 27 is named after the Golden Gate Strait near San Francisco.

The new system focuses on enhancing: AI-assisted workflows; Spotlight search capabilities; system performance optimization; and faster file and photo processing speeds.

The new macOS refactored the search function, adopting a new underlying architecture capable of indexing all content on the device and adding new content almost in real time. Additionally, the search experience in the "Photos" and "Mail" apps via Spotlight has been improved.

-   iPadOS 27

Apple continues to push the iPad towards becoming a productivity device.

Key features include: optimized multitasking; AI-assisted document creation; and enhanced Apple Pencil collaboration.

-   watchOS 27

Apple Watch adds more health and fitness smart features and introduces AI-assisted health recommendations.

-   visionOS 27

Vision Pro continues to be an important carrier of Apple's spatial computing strategy.

The new system strengthens: spatial collaboration experiences; multi-window management; AI content generation capabilities; and deep integration with Apple Intelligence.

As Apple's software chief, Federighi addressed the high expectations outsiders have for Apple's software, stating that the company's focus this year is on improving the reliability and experience of existing features. He pointed out that excellent operating systems (OS) are often built on meticulous attention to detail, not just reliance on major new features.

## Why Was the Market Reaction Muted? Apple AI Still Faces Three Major Challenges

Apple's press conference revolved almost entirely around AI, but the market reaction was clearly below expectations. Analysis suggests the reasons mainly stem from three aspects:

1.  Some features remain in the Beta stage. The new Siri, which investors were most concerned about, has not officially launched but will be open for testing in the fall. This means Apple is still some distance away from true large-scale commercial application.
2.  Limited innovation compared to competitors. Whether it is AI assistants, visual recognition, or writing tools, many features already have similar capabilities in products like Google's Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Anthropic's Claude. The market was more eager for Apple to showcase unique advantages rather than just filling gaps.
3.  Global rollout remains restricted by regulations. Apple explicitly stated that the new Apple Intelligence will not launch in the Chinese market in the short term, and the rollout pace in the EU market will also be affected by local regulations. This means Apple's AI ecosystem will struggle to achieve synchronized global expansion in the short term.
