Shares are down 23% year-to-date as concerns mount over a valuation that remains among the richest in the software sector. At the same time, the rapid rise of AI-native competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic has raised questions about how traditional enterprise software providers will fit into an increasingly AI-driven landscape, adding pressure to software stocks more broadly. ### Introducing TipRanks MCP for Agents - Deliver institutional-grade market data directly into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and other MCP-compatible AI tools. - Designed for personal research, portfolio monitoring, and AI-assisted investment workflows. Against this backdrop, Baird's William Power, an analyst ranked among the top 3% on Wall Street, recently hosted investor meetings with Palantir's management. "While investors have fretted over potential Anthropic/OpenAI competition, we remain positive on PLTR's competitive differentiation," the 5-star analyst said. "Foundational models are just one piece of the puzzle, and Palantir's ontological capabilities help customers extract more value from them." > Echoing that point, management stressed that customers require a structured ontology layer to achieve the level of precision and accuracy needed for enterprise use cases, rather than relying solely on the probabilistic outputs of large language models. The company also pointed to differences in its go-to-market approach, highlighting its use of FDEs (forward-deployed engineers) as a key distinction from AI labs. It also emphasized its broader framework, including a semantic layer, value-based pricing, and embedded security and governance guardrails. Additionally, Power thinks an issue that gets "missed with some investors" is that Palantir's platform remains model-agnostic, meaning there is no lock-in to any single large language model provider. As model performance continues to evolve rapidly across providers, this flexibility means customers can avoid the "risk of LLM vendor lock-in." From a valuation perspective, Power believes PLTR "continues to grow into its valuation." Based on his free cash flow estimates of $4.32 billion in 2026 and $6.70 billion in 2027, the stock currently trades at roughly 83x and 54x free cash flow, respectively. That said, he still views ~$8 billion of free cash flow in 2027 as a reasonable upside case, which would imply a more palatable valuation of around 44x. "We believe PLTR continues to lead the way in harnessing the power of AI for customers," Power summed up. "With industry-leading growth/margins, PLTR remains one of our top ideas." All told, Power assigns PLTR an Outperform (i.e., Buy) rating, backed by a $200 price target. Should the figure be met, a year from now, investors will be pocketing returns of ~47%. (To watch Power's track record, click here) The Street's average price target is not quite as high, yet at $185.35, it still factors in 12-month returns of ~36%. On the rating front, based on 13 Buys, 5 Holds and 2 Sells, the analyst consensus rates the stock a Moderate Buy.
