# EU regulators stated that Apple cannot obtain an exemption from technology regulations amid the controversy surrounding the delayed rollout of Apple's Siri artificial intelligence

EU regulators criticized Apple on Tuesday. Apple previously stated that it does not plan to launch the upgraded AI voice assistant Siri in the EU due to restrictions imposed by EU technology regulations. Regulators indicated that they have rejected Apple's request for an 18-month exemption from compliance obligations.

On Tuesday, Apple announced that the new AI version of Siri will not initially be available on iPhone and iPad devices in the EU, accusing the European Commission of failing to engage in constructive communication, resulting in an inability to reach a consensus on device privacy and security guarantees.

Apple had proposed to regulators a plan to establish an interim transition solution over 18 months to ensure that various virtual assistants could safely access the new AI version of Siri, but this request was denied.

The European Commission dismissed Apple's accusations.

Commission spokesperson Thomas Reynaert stated to reporters in Brussels, "The decision not to launch the AI version of Siri in the EU is entirely Apple's unilateral decision." He noted that there are no provisions in the Digital Markets Act that prohibit companies from launching new products in the EU.

Reynaert pointed out, "Apple simply failed to develop an interoperable solution that meets the EU's core privacy and security standards."

"Apple did not attempt to create a compliance solution, but instead directly requested the European Commission for an exemption from its interoperability obligations under the Digital Markets Act, with an exemption period of at least 18 months. This request is unacceptable."

In the last fiscal year, the European market contributed nearly 27% of Apple's total revenue, and the company did not disclose sales figures specifically for the EU region.

Apple had previously stated that several features were forced to be delayed in the EU due to the Digital Markets Act, including iPhone screen mirroring to Mac, real-time translation for AirPods, and location-related features in the maps application.

The Digital Markets Act aims to curb the market power of large tech companies, create greater competitive space for rivals, and enhance consumer choices. Companies that violate this act could face fines of up to 10% of their global annual revenue
