# Palantir Co-Founder Issues Stark Warning on AI Layoff Claims

Palantir cofounder Joe Lonsdale said some companies may be using artificial intelligence as a justification for layoffs that are really driven by overhiring and slower growth.

Lonsdale pointed to recent cuts at Block, Atlassian and Coinbase, saying the explanations sounded alike and appeared to mask broader staffing resets. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and Khosla Ventures partner Jon Chu echoed his view. Block CEO Jack Dorsey has also faced criticism over the company's earlier hiring surge during the pandemic; he said that explanation was partly true, but argued it left out other operational details.

Gannon McCollum, a staffer at Elon Musk's xAI, said the AI explanation can sound better than admitting management mistakes, while Dockvine founder Sid Jain called it a public-relations tactic. Lonsdale replied with support.

The comments follow earlier remarks from OpenAI chief Sam Altman, who said in February that some firms were AI-washing layoffs. Lonsdale, whose 8VC backs several AI startups, said he believes AI can raise productivity, but argued many job cuts still reflect company-specific decisions.
