The energy storage unit of BYD (HKEX: 1211) said Hungary's largest battery storage project, built by Greenvolt Power, has been officially put into operation. A commissioning ceremony was recently held at the site, attended by Hungary's State Secretary for Energy András Tóth, among others, according to a press release on Saturday. The project has a capacity of 99.8 MW / 288.6 MWh, with BYD providing a 288.6-MWh MC Cube battery storage system, one of its core storage products. Join us on Telegram or Google News The MC Cube system features high safety, ultra-high integration and rapid response, and can meet needs such as grid frequency regulation and peak shaving, making it suitable for large-scale grid-level scenarios, BYD said. BYD said that once in operation, the project will significantly enhance the local grid's regulating capacity and power supply reliability, helping Hungary and the Central and Eastern European region integrate renewable energy on a large scale. BYD's energy storage business began in 2008 and has expanded on the back of its technological expertise in batteries and system integration. The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) and battery giant said it has now delivered multiple large-scale storage projects across more than 110 countries and regions worldwide. The commissioning of the Hungary project marks another step in BYD's deepening presence in the European market and its broader push into the global energy transition, in line with a wider trend of Chinese battery and storage makers expanding their overseas business. Last month, BYD's energy storage unit signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Norway's Corvus Energy AS. The two companies plan to jointly advance the development and large-scale roll-out of high-rate marine lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery systems. Bergen, Norway-based Corvus is a leading global developer of marine energy storage systems, holding more than 50% of the global market share in maritime zero-emission solutions. Chinese peers are also stepping up their efforts, with Eve Energy signing an 8 GWh storage order with India's GNEPL last month. In another overseas development, Trina Storage, a unit of Trina Solar, is also expanding in international markets. The company said on Saturday it has signed a 160 MWh grid-level storage project in Japan's Kyushu region. Equipment delivery for the project is scheduled for 2026, with grid connection and commissioning expected in 2027, Trina Storage said. The project will use Trina Storage's in-house developed Elementa 2 storage system, which has a single-unit capacity of up to 5 MWh.
