While the U.S. maintains an edge in software and private investment, China leads in quantum networking and deployment. The rally reflects investor anticipation of commercialization, though analysts warn that execution, not hype, will determine long-term winners in this volatile, strategic sector." datetime: "2026-06-16T09:48:10.000Z" locales: - [zh-CN](https://longbridge.com/zh-CN/news/289897220.md) - [en](https://longbridge.com/en/news/289897220.md) - [zh-HK](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/289897220.md) --- # Quantum Stocks Surge as U.S.-China Race Heats Up Quantum computing stocks moved higher on Monday, with one name in particular – Horizon Quantum Holdings (HQ) jumping 63%. Other names, such as D-Wave Quantum Inc. (QBTS), rose "only" 12% after Mizuho analysts raised their price target on the stock. The move also lifted other names in the group, including Xanadu Quantum (XNDU), which rose about 18%; Rigetti Computing (RGTI), which rose about 8%; and Quantum Computing Inc. (QUBT), which rose about 12%. ### Claim 55% Off TipRanks Explore IBX for 2X leverage on IBM The rally comes as a new report from the Special Competitive Studies Project, or SCSP, says the U.S. still holds a narrow lead over China in quantum technologies. The report also warns that China is closing the gap through a coordinated national strategy that combines state funding, infrastructure, manufacturing support, and talent development. For investors, the takeaway is fairly simple: quantum is still early, but the race is getting intense. The eventual winners may not be the companies with the loudest prototypes. They will likely be the companies and countries that can turn quantum research into real systems used in computing, sensing, and secure communications. ## **U.S. Still Leads in Software and Private Innovation** The SCSP report says the U.S. remains ahead in several areas that matter for commercial quantum computing. These include quantum software, error correction, private investment, and parts of the supply chain. That helps explain why investors continue to track companies such as IonQ, Rigetti, and D-Wave. IonQ is developing trapped-ion quantum computers and sells access to its systems through cloud platforms. Rigetti is building superconducting quantum processors and full-stack quantum computing systems. D-Wave is best known for quantum annealing, a method aimed at optimization problems, while also working on gate-model quantum systems. Larger technology companies also remain central to the story. International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), a global technology and cloud computing company, has built one of the most visible quantum ecosystems through IBM Quantum and Qiskit. Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), the parent company of Google, has also been active in quantum research through Google Quantum AI and its Cirq software framework. The software angle is important because developers tend to build around the tools they already know. If U.S.-led platforms remain the default choice for researchers and companies, that could create a durable advantage even before quantum computers become broadly commercial. ## **China's Edge Is in Deployment** China's strength looks different. The SCSP report says China already has an edge in quantum networking, especially in quantum key distribution, or QKD. This technology is designed to make communications more secure by using quantum principles to detect interference. China has also made progress in quantum materials, manufacturing, and talent development. The report points to lower cleanroom construction costs and strong state support as potential advantages for scaling production. That does not make China the automatic winner. Quantum computing remains technically difficult, timelines are uncertain, and many publicly traded quantum companies still have limited revenue compared with their valuations. Investors in names like IonQ, Rigetti, D-Wave, and Quantum Computing Inc. are still betting on future commercialization, not current profits. Nvidia Corporation (NVDA), a leading AI chip and accelerated computing company, may also play a role as quantum systems become more connected to classical computing infrastructure. Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), a cloud and software giant, is another company to watch through Azure Quantum and its broader enterprise cloud platform. The SCSP report's clearest message is that the quantum race will be decided by execution, not headlines. For retail investors, that means the sector can remain volatile, but the theme is no longer just scientific hype. Quantum is becoming a strategic technology race, and the market is starting to price that possibility into the valuations of a growing list of public stocks.
