# CSPC’s Efmedaglutide Alfa Wins Second NMPA Review for Type 2 Diabetes

An announcement from CSPC Pharmaceutical Group ( (HK:1093) ) is now available.

CSPC Pharmaceutical Group announced that China’s National Medical Products Administration has accepted a second marketing authorization application for its once-weekly Efmedaglutide Alfa (Shanmeining) injection, this time for glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. The drug, a Class 1 therapeutic biological product, had previously been filed in China for long-term weight management in overweight or obese adults, underscoring CSPC’s push into the fast-growing GLP-1 segment.

The latest application is backed by two pivotal Phase III trials in Chinese type 2 diabetes patients, showing rapid and durable reductions in HbA1c of more than 1% by week 8 and up to over 2% in those with higher baseline levels, along with weight loss and improved lipid, blood pressure and other metabolic parameters. In combination with metformin, Efmedaglutide Alfa delivered superior long-term glycaemic control versus dulaglutide, while demonstrating a favorable safety and tolerability profile with fewer gastrointestinal side effects, lower discontinuation rates, and a faster four-week dose escalation, positioning it as a potentially competitive new treatment option in China’s diabetes market.
