# Google and Microsoft Join Forces to Launch New Protocol, Traditional Tech Giants Contain Anthropic and OpenAI Through Standards War

Traditional tech giants such as Google and Microsoft are joining forces to build a new technical barrier, attempting to block the expansion of OpenAI and Anthropic in the enterprise AI market.

On June 18, according to a report by The Information, companies including Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, Snowflake, and ServiceNow jointly announced their support for a new software standard called "Agentic Resource Discovery" (ARD).

**The protocol aims to allow corporate employees to access all company AI tools and features through a single application**, thereby positioning their own products as the unified gateway for enterprise AI usage. Notably, **Anthropic and OpenAI are not included in the initial list of supporters.**

The launch of the ARD protocol further intensifies the struggle for ecosystem dominance between traditional tech giants and emerging AI forces.

## ARD Protocol Analysis: From Technical Evolution to Ambitions for an "Entry-Level Platform"

The core objective of the ARD protocol is to drive traditional enterprise software vendors like Microsoft and Google to transform their products into entry-level platforms that serve as unified gateways for accessing various AI capabilities.

According to reports, under this protocol, when employees **initiate AI tasks** through applications such as GitHub Copilot, Google Gemini, or Salesforce CRM, **the system can automatically identify and invoke all AI functions and services supporting ARD, eliminating the need for users to manually switch tools.**

Microsoft stated in a blog post: "ARD assists AI clients in discovering various capabilities but does not replace authentication, authorization, governance, or organizational trust decisions."

From a technical evolution perspective, ARD inherits from the Model Context Protocol (MCP) released by Anthropic last year. MCP also aims to enable AI agents to access external application data, functioning similarly to an API. Microsoft, OpenAI, and Google had previously supported MCP. The proposal of ARD is seen as a further expansion and extension of the MCP concept against the backdrop of deepening enterprise AI applications.

## The "Gateway Battle" Between AI Newcomers and Tech Giants

The attitudes of Anthropic and OpenAI toward this new standard are quite telling. Neither company has joined the initial camp of ARD supporters. According to The Information's analysis, **as challengers in the enterprise application market, the two may choose to actively ignore the protocol.**

**The core reason lies in a fundamental conflict in strategic direction**: Anthropic and OpenAI strive to make Claude and ChatGPT the primary gateway for employees to access all AI tools and enterprise applications, rather than serving merely as a component within someone else's ecosystem. This stands in direct opposition to the "self-centered" ecosystem logic that Microsoft and Google aim to construct through ARD.

Currently, traditional software vendors and emerging AI companies are racing to develop so-called "superagents"—general-purpose AI systems capable of executing tasks across applications. Whether ARD will gain widespread adoption remains highly uncertain.
