Samsung's Q2 operating profit soared 1810%, more than double last year, but faced pressure at the opening, dragging down the Korean stock market by 6.3% South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics today (7th) announced its preliminary financial report for the second quarter of 2026, with consolidated revenue reaching 171 trillion KRW (approximately 11.18 billion USD), a year-on-year increase of 129.3% and a quarter-on-quarter increase of 27.7%. Operating profit soared to 89.4 trillion KRW (approximately 5.84 billion USD), a year-on-year increase of 1810%, setting a new record for the highest quarterly profit for three consecutive quarters, and more than double last year's total profit of 43.6 trillion KRW, exceeding the total profit for the three years from 2023 to 2025. The impressive performance was mainly driven by the Device Solutions (DS) semiconductor sector, with explosive demand for AI servers boosting HBM and DRAM prices. The operating profit of the DS sector for the quarter is estimated to reach approximately 80 trillion KRW. It is worth noting that the 89.4 trillion KRW already includes about 20 trillion KRW set aside for semiconductor employee performance bonuses, and the actual operating profit, after excluding this, is close to 110 trillion KRW. In USD terms, Samsung's operating profit for Q2 this year has briefly surpassed NVIDIA's 53.5 billion USD for Q1 of the 2027 fiscal year. If the memory price increase cycle continues, the market expects a chance to surpass again in the third quarter. Despite the impressive results, Samsung's stock price fell by as much as 6.3% during trading today, while its peer SK Hynix also dropped over 3%. Analysts pointed out that the market had already priced in the strong financial performance, and investors took the opportunity to cash in on profits, dragging the Korean KOSPI index down over 4% at the opening, with a drop of 4.1% to 7717.82 points at one point. Samsung is expected to release the complete financial report details at the end of July, with the market focusing on the progress of HBM3E certification and the penetration rate of the Blackwell platform.
